701 steering break

WB your weld looks good. I don't think anyone is saying that all the 701 steering systems suck and will break. They obviously have a few that are problems. I am more upset at the lack response from the manufacture.

@hooter I was the one who sold the steering to @jpweeks173 so I know extactly where it was how hard it was ridden ect. It was also supposed to be Daves latest design ect and welds were good. I went through 3 of these steering systems all due to welds failing. I have pictures to prove it and also hundreds of witnesses at an event including the ex 701 rep for the usa. Every time the steering broke it was due to welds failing. This last one was re welded and supposed to be bullet proof and I rode it for half a season no issues ect so I thought "hey its finally right and good and safe to sell". Well as per my convos with JP he had the same issues with Dave as i did, Never his products fault. We were not looking to bash anyone on open forums, we kept it to private messages and just wanted the steering fixed or replaced as we spent good money for what was promised and came up short. So all those messages he sends to customers as it cant be his welds fault ....how come I know of none of these steering's breaking in any other way then welds failing. I has 3 failures and I know/read of a bunch others. I know hes trying to make a good product and he had some great ideas, but stand behind your product like the rest of the industry does dont deny it and say you have never seen it happen when damn well you have. Make it right and you wouldnt have negativity on the boards like he does.

You say potatoe , I say potato . I was just showing what mine looked like for comparison and I will be pulling mine and have it rewelded.

I know in the middle of a rocker thread I posted how my 701 surf plugs leaked and dave came right on and was pretty rude and said none have ever leaked and nobody has ever complained and it must be some fault of mine. He does have some cool ideas but I think he must have a large surplus of panties cause his get bunched easily and often.

Just go look at every thread he starts for a new product and read the "end all be all" hype he pukes out. Like his claim that blaster hood hinges get destroyed in part by the side to side hood movement even when your blaster hood is locked down ..... Im still waiting for anyone to show me a video of this side to side movement let alone the fact that he claims this 3mm of movement destroys hood hinges. Weren't these stock hood hinges a sloppy mess before they were even installed at the factory?

I agree. I had a set of 701 plugs on my blaster I just finished a couple weeks ago. I noticed that when my ski sat at the dock it took on water fairly quick. I blamed it on a couple other things I did while building. I fixed those things and rode it again. This time we were at a sand bar for a few hours. I had to go over to the blaster every 10 min to turn the bilges on because it would get 3-4 inches of water in it. I pulled the 701 plugs out and installed stock drains with one versiplug. I rode it last night for the first time. At the end of the ride I purposely let it sit floating for 10 min. didn't take on a drop of water. I am convinced it was the 701 plugs. I actually have a plan as to how to test and confirm it was them and ill post it on here. I don't usually waste time with this even if I buy a crappy product but the fact he didn't even PM me back pisses me of a little.

I think one of the replies I saw was that its called a "surf plug" not a "hang out at the dock plug"

If your 701 plugs are installed just try and blow through them , if there is air leaking then water can also leak. looks like the new ones have the flip down caps to prevent leaking while sitting at the sand bar.

I,m not saying it has has not happened before , I have never seen it happen myself , there was a aussie over here not long after the steering came out that claimed he broke it and broke this and that , posted it everywhere , but when asked for proof or photos , there was nothing , just a smear campaign , bloke was a tosser,
The steering in the first photos looks to me like the welds are insufficient , is this the one you got welded, the welds that have been done to rectify the issue look great , and i doubt they will break,
This issue is not a hard problem to fix , just get bigger welds put on the area , and obviously everyone check there welds ,

I doubt someone bought a steering, broke it, and then decided a malicious smear campaign was the only way to handle it.

More like: an Aussie broke his steering. when he presented the problem and broken parts to the supplier he receive a response similar to the one that prompted this thread. Arrogance, ignorance, and blatant denial. So he got upset and instead of formulating his feelings into a well though out argument, he broadcast his feelings about the steering on an open forum. But you're probably right. Most likely a smear campaign.

I am not really sure what you or I are doing in this thread, hooter. I guess we just "haven't seen" a reason to leave, yet.

Wow that thing looks like a monster! How do you like it? Is it heavy? I have a 701 QS brand new have not had time to install it yet. I only have heard good things about 701 industries, Dave is a good guy and his products look good. I hope this was a fluke, I never heard of this before. I have to give mine a look over but from what I remember it looks G2G welds are big fat beads!

Hate to steal the thread but what Pro taper bars are you guys running? Kx High, Pastrana FMX, or the Windhams? Anyone running the Renthal fat bars? What are the straightest bars with not much sweep?

@Quinc They are $399 shipped? Does the Guy still have any to ship out? What bars and bar pad do you use? I am just about to order Renthal Fat Bars RC High 609. Will the pad fit on that steering set up?

@701dave someone got injured using your product. Legally that can open you up to punitive damages which could be awarded in MUCH higher amounts than the actually damages incurred. I would fix the issue, and make things right with these people. I'm not saying anyone here is looking to get rich, but looking for you to do the right thing. Doing it now would be much cheaper than before a lawsuit that can possibly bankrupt you. Just a little FYI.

Im not one that usually gets involved with key board heroes, but I will try to put straight some of these negative posts.
With the warranty claim from JP Weeks, I did not knock him back because he bought it second hand, nor because it was more than 2 years old, with no answer from him how this happen, its was my opinion that under normal freeride abuse, this system along with every other system around the globe, could not have failed , and for the record, zero have. To me its been in some sort of roll over.
Now to address Modular Junks claims: Its unfortunate what happen to you, but its also a bit tough to hold me responsible. Your steering was in the first 18 sets to be sold in the States. Only a week or so after they had landed, a design flaw [which had not showed up in testing] became apparent in the stop tag. Straight away, this Stop tag was reinforced, all steerings sold to that point had replacement shafts with the new stop tag expressed posted to them. 18 replacement shafts were sent to chris along with $17 per shaft for him to post out. As far as I knew, this had been done. Only became aware that he dropped the ball on this months later when yours failed. He told me he replaced the steering cable for you as he knew he stuffed up.
Now you claim other parts of the system broke and you have photos to prove it. Im calling on you to back up what you say and put up the prove. You also claim you spoke to me, im guessing on email, I don't even know your name, I say you never have and feel free to prove otherwise.
So to end this, I fully believe these systems are built tough and will not fail under freeride conditions.

Lol......I've stayed out of anything 701 Industries related Dave, we both know what you're saying isn't true, no need to try to divert blame to me. All I ever did was try to fix all the quality issues and keep customers happy. Let's not open a bigger can of worms for you.

All I have to say that we don't exactly know how it happened, but I have dealt with Dave personally and he is a straight up guy very honest and helpful! I have a 701 Qs-s, Superfly B1 seat and Surf straps, Rear Grab Handles, and a HD hood hinge and have never had any issues, If I have any questions Dave has as was got back to me right away willing to help me with any questions I have had and go out of his way to take care of me!

I wouldn't judge him or any company off one issue. I know it sucks it happen but I think that if it is a part issue Dave will take care of it.
