Another dang FX1 pump thread......

I have finished putting together my ski as well with the kawi 650 conversion. I want to thank JD for doing some machine work for me as well as walking me through this. :biggthumpup:

All in all Im very psyched to get this in the water although looking outside today its snowing and is in the mid 30's. Hopefully this coming weekend.

I ended up with a blueprinted and rebuilt (bearings and seals) kawi 650 pump running a straight 15 prop.

Other than the work JD mentioned in his build I found that I had to grind down the reinforcement ribs in my riva ride plate to clearance the pump and I also ended up having to shim the ride plate down about 1/8".

while the turf was up, I also decided to add a footstrap. I just glassed in some T-nuts with about 3 layers of glass.

pump rebuilds are not hard at all. I was going to do a writeup for the tech section but I didnt have a digital camera on me when I did it.

Basically:

Purchased rebuild kit from Jetskimechanic (Thanks!) for about $35.

Remove the pump cone, prop and shaft. Then remove old seals and drive the old bearings out.

Put the new bearings in the freezer for a while. Then use an oversize socket or bearing driver and drive them in one at a time with the spacer in between them. Then grease and install the new seals. The bearins are sealed and self containing of their own grease.

Then install shaft with new orings, prop and pump cone.

Is that 5100 sealing your pump in? If so, it may be tough to remove.

If you have the budget, the SXR prop and R&D pump cone is an unbelievable upgrade.

No its not 5200, its a white silicone/caulk. Nowhere near the strength of 5200

Yeah, the sxr prop and pump cone are something I may be looking into this summer. You are running a stock sxr prob thats cut back correct?

Your pump looks like it sits a little high and you mentioned having to shim the ride plate, did you grind the lip off the perimeter of the pump? There's a rib all around the pump entrance (on the outside) that should be ground down flush.....sorry if I missed that in the thread?

The pump area (on each side of the scoop grate) should be flush with the bottom of the hull and should not stick down. Check it out, if you missed this it should take more that about 15-20 mins to grind it off and remount.

yeah it did seem a little high to me... I couldnt quite tell if yours was sitting perfectly flush and I didnt remember you saying that you had to grind your rideplate. I will pull the pump and check to see if I did grind everything off there. Thanks.

EDIT: Images, Here is what it currently looks like. When I beat the stock pump shoe out it inevitably took some glass with it, I then ground it down flat with my dremel to avoid scractching myself and had planned on later filling it in.

It does look a little high to me right now... what do you think?

Yeah, it's definitely too low. It should be almost flush, maybe sticking down a 1/16". I'll take some pics later and post the grindage work that needs to be done to the pump and how it should sit in the hull. Sorry, I realized I never covered this in this thread.

I tried to get a couple of pics showing the pump shoe elevation and the area of the pump you need to grind for clearance. The flash made most of them just a big washout shot, but here's a couple that sort of came out.

As far as the pump, there is a little raised lip around the perimeter of the front of the pump. You can grind this completely off all the way down to where it meets the flat area next to the scoop grate. In fact, do not grind away any of the flat area. This will let the pump lay right into the lip in the hull left by the removal of the FX shoe.

Any pointers on removing the OEM pump shoe? And also removing the rubber from around the OEM Kawie driveshaft support. Thanks for the help.

My stock pump shoe came out in pieces. I've heard a heat gun will help, but I tried prying mine out and it broke. Oh well, it's one way to commit!

As far as the Kawi bearing housing, I found the easiest way to get the aluminum core out was to use a hole saw that's just a little larger than the inner core. It cuts through pretty quickly and is a lot less work than trying to remove all that rubber in the lathe (as I did on the first couple I tried). Once you have the core removed, you need to machine it down for an interference fit into the Yamaha housing. I went with a .002" interference and then freeze the core before inserting it.....good luck!

Im not doin jack with the trim right now. I just want to get it in the water. Sometime this summer when the SN is together I may take the fx off the water for a week or two and install a trim setup. We'll see.

The pics are great, good angle. I am going to re-work my pump/ pump area a bit this afternoon after class and get it mounted up again in time to ride this weekend. Looks like the weather is FINALLY turning out here.

Did you grind into the glass AT ALL underneath where the stock pump shoe was or did you just remove the old glue and thats it?

Also took the time to repair some of the damage caused by removing the stock shoe.

Yes rideplate fit without shims this time. It was still necessary to have the ribs ground off the underside of the ride plate though.

Battery is on the tender/charger as we speak!:woot:

Got my first test run in this weekend. HOLY poop does it hook up. I was loving it, totally woke my ski up.
