I am considering having this built to solve my towing needs. This will eliminate my need to reconfig my single trailer and prevent me from having to leave a ski unattended at any boat ramp.

The rack will consist of 2x2x1/4 black powder coated STL tongue and naked 2x2 AL angle. The aluminum will be bolted to the steel tongue via 2x2 ribs in the center and stainless hardware. Standard 2x4 bunks will be bolted to the inside of the angle to hold the ski. Total weight of this rig is approximately 30lbs.

Anyone that might be interested in purchasing a rack like this let me know. I may consider making more than one and be able to keep cost down a little. Not a super cheap setup but definitely quality.

Thoughts?

how much? How much can it tow behind it? Also spots to tie the ski down too?

This is the detailed addition and only minor (I think) changes will take place from this point. I expect that we'll change the 2x2 al angle "spine" to 2x2 stl for more strength. This will result in a change in bolt placement.

Hopefully I'll have the prototype built soon so I can do some testing and alteration as necessary.

I think this rig will require a tongue rating of 500lbs or greater to be safe. (300lb wet ski, minimal weight due to rig and increase tongue length, single trailer with 75/100 lb tongue weight)

There seems to be quite a bit of interest so I may set up a group buy when I finalize the design.

We tested the prototype rack yesterday and it worked great. If you're interested in buying one of these send me a PM and I can provide you more details. I don't want to start a new thread until we have the finished product to take photos of. The rack goes back to the shop today for powder coating and I should have it back by the end of the week.

If there is enough interest we will have a number of them made and available for purchase.

We have established a theoretical estimate and have not yet tested for max tow rating.

The rack will require a hitch tongue capacity of 500 lbs or more if you intended to carry a standup and tow a trailer. The trailers tongue weight should not exceed 150 lbs. Until further testing, the tow rating is limited to a very safe 50% of the vehicles towing capacity or 1500 lbs, whichever is the lesser value of the two.

I used the rack I designed recently and it worked great, looks great too. I couldn't be happier. Loading and unloading is easy with this type of setup.

I could take pics if anyone is interested.

This is the one I designed and had built. I really like it. Getting the ski on and off is easier than I thought it would be.

Nice..... If I had to do it all over again I'd definitely steal this design. hows the clearance with the tailgate or side of the ski to the bumper? do you have that "wiggle" when the ski is on it?

Hey thanks, I think. I have to find some other pics with a ski on it, plenty of clearance. Tailgate obviously will not open. There is a wiggle yes but strangely enough I can't tell when I'm driving, there is no clunking involved.

I love this I had it on my blazer but I would recommend adding some type of protective rail. As someone said some time ago, that can make an expensive bumper.

Never the less, great design and If I didnt have a passat Id build another one yours looks more professional then mine. Good work.

Only thing I would change is to move the ski back more so you can open the rear hatch while the ski is on there... (I did mine that way and it worked good)

I'd pull it is as tight as possible. Does that design allow for some adjustment?
