nobody, and I mean NOBODY, can ride those waves safely. The only thing that makes one guy survive, and another die, is experience. Buds near by to pull you out doesn't hurt either.
It takes more than "nuts" to get barrelled in a big wave.
Reef or not, the power of that thing can keep you down longer than you can hold your breath.
In Hawaii, I learned this first hand.
Always respect the power of the ocean. Work with it and live. Fight it and die.
But, again, there is no such thing as a safe 20' wave.
If you decide to drop in on a 20 footer, you had better damn well have the skills to finish it out. I did not have the skills. I quit surfing in Hawaii.
Can you honestly say that you're sure the nose of your jet-ski won't dig-in at the bottom?
Cause if it does, you're done.
We've all been rolled for 100 yards by 5 footers when that happens. Think about it.
