so the 44's were much better that the 38s? I have always ran 44s on my 781, but was curios to see what the 38s felt like. But sounds like I dont need to.

I wouldn't say much better. A little better mid-top end. More consistent. I trust them to hit when I need them to. I had three new carb manifold gaskets fail in less than a year with the 38's causing me to pull air.
