Oh don't be like that. I played on the fence with the 9, 12 and 14 because I wasn't sure which would provide enough energy. My 14 crapped out after only a couple months so I went back to my 9. I soon discovered the 9 was crapping out too and I finally tracked it down to corroded battery cables. Once I replaced those, the 9 was more than adequate. It runs 2 bilges all day, (even if I forget to turn them off), and cranks my SS865 all weekend. I even leave it hooked up now for up to a couple weeks between rides and it holds a charge just fine. My wife's 07 Superjet has been known to crank up after sitting for a couple months even.

So, you can run a 12 or a 14 with the added reserve, it certainly won't hurt, I'm just saying that's not enough of a reason for me to not recommend the ETX9 to anyone.

Yeah. Now gulp a tiny bit of water and try to get it restarted on the beach. 5 miles from the truck with your spare battery.

I tried the etx-9 route and while it did work fine during normal operation, the inability to crank after gulping some water or sinking made me go back to etx-16. The few pounds isn't worth it to me.

Now if i left my scissor stand and rode 15 feet off the beach all day with a light flatwater ski I would run a 2 lb battery. Cause I can swim that far. I can't swim 5 miles in current while dragging a ski.

I had similar experiences, in a mild 701 with a charging system. Any ingested water and you were done (this is when I used to ride surf).

They work, but have limited reserve. Everyone has an opinion. That's why I posted the sheet. I just don't see the need to directly argue someone's opinion when they are simply offering their advice/experience. The OP can decide what's best for them.

I have a ton of respect for you Boyer, and really believe in your products. I know you know your stuff on the electrical side of things for sure. We all have opinions, and we can agree to disagree on this one. I just get tired of the constant criticism or heated arguments (this is not directed at your post). One person can't attempt to help another without the army of keyboard warriors launching a full frontal assault!

Sorry man, that really did come out wrong and I do apologize. You made very good points that I would have agreed with any other day of the week. Not sure where my head was at.

LoL you guys sure had a nice argument about my battery question! Lol. My ski is a simple modded 2012 superjet, ada head, b pipe, jetting , hooker prop etc etc. still on stock charging system. To be honest im just looking for the best replacement battery I can buy for my application. A sealed battery because my ski does roll often. Ive always had great experience with oddysey batteries in my race cars so maybe ill go that route

It was a friendly discussion. :)

Odyssey has a great rep. Certainly a good option.

Another vote for Deka ETX9. My RN has all the common bolt ons and it does the job perfectly. Buddy of mine with the same setup uses a ETX12 and loves it.

Deka batts are made by East Penn i think and that company makes several private label batts such as "intimidator" which are identical to the "DEKA" labelled batteries.

For under $60 its an easy choice.

I'll throw a vote for the Odysseys. My last one was in my SJ for 9 years and I only bought a new one because the age was starting to make me nervous. My SJ is set up very similar to r12xmark's.

Been running Deka 9's for 2.5 years FW and surf no problems even with some water ingestion, plenty of cranking power at 205 compression. Quality AGM that sits at 12.7 volts for a long time without charging.

That is correct. Deka batteries are made by East Penn Manufacturing. I have been running Deka batteries for years without any issues. I have been using seconds as well.

Great info guys. Thanks all. My takeaway is that there are 3 choices.

1. AGM battery that matches stock specs (330 CCA, 19 Ah), like a Deka ETX16 (325, 19, 17 lbs, ~$100)
2. AGM battery that is lighter & below stock specs, like a Deka ETX9 (120, 8, 7.1 lbs, ~$50) or Deka ETX 12 (220, 12, 12 lbs, ~$65) or Odyssey PC310 (100, 7, 5.9 lbs, ~$180)
3. Lithium battery, like a WPS Featherlight HJTX20HL (420, ?, 3.7lbs, ~$180) or Ballistic Dry 12 Cell (410, 20, 2.5lbs, ~$190)

Seems like the lithium battery needs to be charged separately w/ an auto shutdown charger. Can anyone describe the extra work for this. Is charging needed after each ride? once a month? once a season?... & does the SuperJet charging system mess it up?

The only lithium battery a stock charging system wont slowly kill is an earthx battery. Its a little pricey compared to the ballistic battery, but the built in management system takes care of balancing the cells. You dont need to buy a special charger for it
