Budget total loss?

Matt E,
Andrew did state it correctly with the stock CDI, so you are you talking MDS -TL, correct?
No comparison with MSD-TL and their stock replacement enhancer! MSD-TL is the way to go, as anybody else ignitions are out of business (vilders) or one off's and not readily available for the general public for distribution, parts, and service as of today in the U.S.

Its a pity the exchange rate is so bad you would love our TL Chuck.

I will be buying a MSD analog TL brain and replacing my stock CDI so the TL unit will be controlling everything and still act as a charging unit.

I really am not sure how its done.... but the guy hooking it up knows...

So you will be retaining the stock flywheel and stator, in order to retain charging with a total loss.
And because you'll be doing it with the older analog brain, you will have zero programmability and little in the way of accurate timing adjustment. And you'll have none of the light flywheel/no em drag advantages.

Why do you think this is a good and worthwhile idea?

I'll be running a rad charging wheel and 62t stator. The brain box is fully programmable.

What more could I ask for?

The analog box is certainly not fully programmable. You will be able to set your RPM limit, your start retard RPM, and you rate of retard (a very limited choice in that category)

You could ask for a much lighter flywheel than a RAD (MSD TL fw is 1lb 12 oz), and you could also ask for no electromagnetic drag at all through the full MSD setup.
Rotating the Rad flywheel magnets to charge the battery through the stator fields creates quite a bit of drag.
This may rip, but I assure you that the real setup rips much more.

You could get a $50 charger, a nice battery, and hook up two wires to the battery when you're done riding.
I simply don't think what you're gaining is worth the loss in performance and reliability.

Don't mind me asking, why? Is it a lack of available electric outlets at your ski's location?

EDIT: If you really want to go that way, you would be a lot better off going with an Advent ignition. It simply replaces your stock CDI, you retain charging, you can use the RAD fw and 62T stator, and you have REAL programmability.

I do a lot of solo river riding. So I really do not want to even risk the chance of being stranded. Its bad enough that I dont have a reserve line anymore. I have been entertaining the idea of keeping 2 liters of premix inside the engine compartment in case, but would need to find a nice durable container first.

Secondly, I would love to use advent, but I cannot find one cheaply.

I agree with Matt, I would go for the Advent and get a better setup than trying to jury rig an old analog TL brain and not get the full benefit of a true TL system.

You might want to consider Blackjacks or Supertune Chuck's modded 46s before you go with the buckshots. A lot cleaner carburetion througout and will probably be a little more fuel efficient.

HRmm... I have heard that buckshots were great extremely easy to tune carbs...

How about progressive 46's (if anyone knows what those are exactly... I dont, other than the name)

I guess I just killed this thread...

The buckshot that I had was a PIA to tune and wanted an engine with a strong vacume signal before it would work right, and still was not that great IMO. I know that for the money, tuneability, and ease of tuning, I would go with Chucks modified 46s, Blackjacks from Jetworks, or Full specs. I have been running stock 46s for a few years and they run awesome. I recently bought a set of full spec 48s because I have several friends that run them and they are the best running carbs that I have ridden so far. Another friend has the blackjack 46s and they run awesome, but required some tuning to get them right. That is why I say check with Chuck at Team Scream about his modded 46s first, you will probably get your best bang for your buck rather than shelling out big bucks for the full specs or blackjacks.
