Most engineers don't usde their degrees on the job. I should konw, I have two engineering degrees...

Engineering is ok but I wish someone would have told me to go into Pharmacy or to be a real doctor. Eventually I will get either an MBA or a MSME then Phd in ME so I can teach Statics. Entry level engineering class with 18 year old freshman girls oh yeah! You guys think you could get fired for having "relations" with a female student??? lol

One thing you'll learn, if you want to make money, you'll always be someone's 'lil biaatch'.

production worker = you work for the supervisor
supervisor = work for the manager
manager = work for the president
president = work for the owner
owner = work for the stockholders if public, if not, then for your customers

You just gotta learn where you'll feel comfortable, how far up you want to go, how much responsibility you can handle, etc.

I would almost agree, but I wouldn't say "always."

For example: Building a speculative home

The builder has nobody to answer to through the process of building the house, that is, unless a consumer purchases it during the construction phase and has the opportunity to make changes/custom selections. However, if a spec home goes to completion with only the builder involved, then the builder is working for himself through the process. He is nobody's little biatch. :Banane35:

You still have to sell it, so in the end you're working for a potential customer.

School is just a test to see if you're not a moron.... if you pass you are considered good enough in your university's eyes to get a professional job as an engineer, teacher, or whatever you go to school for... A lot of my schooling that I bring to the job is good problem solving skills, and group colaboration... you dont use calculus 1,2,3 or differential equations at work... but you have to be pretty damn good as studying things, learning, and creative thinking to solve those problems....

a lot of people could do the jobs that we all do... just not everyone has that little piece of paper...

ya know i dont agree with the whole collage thing everyone says you gotta go to collage to find a good job that is not true i didnt even graduate high school and im makeing damn good money prob more than the majority on this site. I sell semi trucks

Yes you can luck out and get a good job without a degree but times have changed from when I started working in engineering a degree is a step in the right direction and will help you get your foot in the door. Katie has a masters and landed a great job working for Monsanto corporate in St. Louis and has every opportunity for advancement in the corporate world, she would have never even been considered for her job if she didn’t have her masters. I have worked in corporate engineering at Anheuser Busch and Earthgrains for 18 years and know to get these types of jobs today you have to have a degree.

You may get a degree and never use it but you will have it just in case you need it, the most important thing is to be happy in what ever you do you only live once. Heck I am 43 and still don’t know what I want to do for a living.

Good deal... school is prob the best bet for the majority of people though... especially if your parents pay for it... or join the military like someone said and get them to pay for a chunk of it...

Like Jett suggested Military is killer way to pick some great skills, free college, discipline, and earn yourself some extra credit to your resume, and not only that, but get decent pay and free insurance to better yourself. Plus you can retire with 20 years......thats 40 years old. Hell you could still work even after you retire and pick up dual checks.

I personally think you'll get better training for civilian jobs in the Navy because of the very large range they cover in all the exercises they do. If your not down to being on a boat for awhile always check out the Air Force, another great way.

People don't join the military sometime because of boot camp or combat. Basic Training is just a small initial investment and not every job/branch is in constant combat or may never be. Just seems like a lot of people want to but don't because of boot camp; its tough but not that damn bad to offset a career.

I perused the USMC because it has been my dream job since i was a little kid. It took me nearly 12 years and a good friend to realize I need to put up or shut up. Marines is just my personal preference though, nothing against any other branches.

I wont be a millionaire in the Marines, but then again I'll earn something no one can buy with any
amount of money.

I see no problem with making those girls work for their extra credit

Mark,

Do you get free beer or a discount on beer? There was an engineer at my old plant who left for a job with Miller Brewing and he was allowed a free case of beer a week! Now I like my beer but I am a binge drinker... A case of beer a week would be a sweet fringe benefit!

Bootcamp could also be a life changing event in some peoples lives to get them into shape... I had a friend who went into the Navy and lost like 60 pounds... he came back from bootcamp and I barely recognized him... granted he gained about 30 of it back from drinking after that, but I imagine a lot of people keep most of it off...

im not saying it wont help you but i just saying that its not the only option for example
in my shop i would rather hire a diesel mechanic that hasent gone through the school
because just because you know the stuff on paper dosent mean your gonna be a good mechanic when putt into reality they many not cut it for example ive hired 3 different guys that came out of school well qualified but takes them two times longer to do something i gave each of them an oppertunity to get used to the work but they were still turtles so i had to let everyone of them go after a few mounths they didnt grasp the fact that they were too slow. I have had more luck hireing joe blow off the strees who has had expierence in the field half as qualified on paper but are amazing mechanics i know im rambling on right now but i guess my point is expierence is the key get out there while your young and do as many things as you can till you find something you love it will come and lick you in the face it may take 20 different jobs and it may take as little as one you never know

He's exactly right.

Being a doctor is no different than being a waiter. Same headaches, different pay.

Bingo

Try to stay in school, you may actually learn something that you can use. Even if you don't, the corporate caste will not let you in without a four year degree. Its like the union card for the 21st century. Do not worry about being competent, VERY few really are, just try to look good and hone your BS skills.

lol good advice........:bad3:

Skilled trades are getting paid well in canada right now.

Plumber, electrician, HVAC, carpenter.

get into the union, make more money than you should, work side jobs for cash, eventually leave the union and open your own firm.

many people doing this with great success i know of.

Personally I'm a broker. Desk job, sales calls, fits my personality, talking and meeting with people, etc...

Is it my dream job? No. However the money is hard to beat for the work involved. Give me enough time and income to try and set up personal business to make monye on the side.

Yep sure did and we were even expected to have a couple at lunch.

When I went to Earthgrains, that was spun off from AB and all AB employees that made up the company we could still had beer at lunch.

I'm a builder. I understand what your saying, but there's a few other things you didn't think about.

1) When you sell the house, the buyer has a walk through. A walk through consists of you or someone in your company walking the house with the buyer and making a list of things they would like fixed or touched up. Essentally your working for them to make them a happy customer. Word of mouth can make or brake a builder. You can't make everyone happy but it's in your best interest to try and do so.

2) Inspectors and codes officials. Here, we have a footing, waterproofing, framing, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, insulation, and final inspections. I rarely have the rough ends (plumb, elec, and HVAC) and framing inspections pass on on the first time. Essentally your working to make the officals happy in this aspect.

It is not required to have any kind of degree to be a contractor. You just have to pass the test to get your contractors license. A bank will usually want you to show 10 percent of what your going to borrow to build.

Right now is a Schity time to get into the bis though... Sales are slow. I wish I had a degree to fall back on too. Kinda like insurance.
