Has anyone asked the custom hull builders what their customers do for insurance?

There were other companies on the previous Google search I mentioned. You might have to make a few phone calls to find one that would insure you.

I did another Google search for:
custom boat insurance

A few links down was a forum post by a guy with a custom boat:
http://www.irbs.com/lists/live-aboard/0407/0205.html

He said Boat US hooked him up. Boat US insurance:
http://www.boatus.com/insurance/policy.asp
You should probably start with a phone call instead of filling out the web form.

One of you might want to start a new thread to see what other people have done for insurance on their custom builds. I hate to say it but a thread on that other site might be worth trying too. The other site has to be good for something.

How hard would it be for hull builders to supply a HIN with the hull? Do rickters come with a HIN? How do Yamaha and Kawasaki get their numbers? If the state gives you a HIN why is it no good with the insurance companies?

That have to get in bed with the fed gov basically.....a coast guard test I believe....and then they can manufacture HIN plates...

I don't believe any builders do it but I could be wrong.

Harrison said Wammer used to do it. Right now, nobody issues a HIN.
It's no good with insurance companies because no manufacturer HIN = homebuilt.

That is weird. You would think if it is good enough for the state to issue a HIN it would be good enough for insurance companies. I'm still curious about how yamaha, kawasaki, wammer and all of the others get a legit HIN for their hulls.

I'm sure theres a marine construction approval in there somewhere as well. All car manufacturers have to pass destructive and other minimal safety testing to get approvals so why wouldn't boat manufacturers?

No testing, no approval, no insurance, sounds pretty normal to me but way too much red tape to go thru for a few hulls a year. Wammer built something like 2500 hulls so there was a little more incentive to jump the hoops.

I doubt Wammer has built 2500 hulls.

We should move this insurance discussion back to one of the "insurance" threads that were going a while back in the General section. Maybe some other members can chime in that haven't viewed this thread... or all 28 pages of it.

Alright, all insurance and HIN talk that was previously in my build thread is now contained in this one.

I have spent weeks and spoken to EVERY company possible to get custom ski insurance... but it just does not exist. State issued HIN = automatic reject. What sucks more is you cannot even get liability.

Sorry I wasn't following your build thread. I could've told you that Progressive would reject you for insurance. Not sure why they even provide a homebuilt option in their quotes if it's an automatic reject. I tried going that route last year. They charge you for the time that it took them to reject you and refund the rest back. It really blows because I have to insure my POS truck that's worth a 1/3 of my ski but can't even get liability for my ski. Hold on to the rejection letter. Maybe you can use it in your defense in the unfortunate event that you hit someone.

Has no one called lloyds of london? Seriously? They insure anything. Anything. Did you get that? Anything. It may be pricey though.

From that website:

What qualifies?

Whether you drive a 1910 Ford Model A or a 2010 Ferrari, we will consider you for our collector vehicle policy. As long as your vehicle holds collector status, is garage-kept and is not used as your daily transportation, you may qualify. Certain state-regulated restrictions may apply. To see if you qualify, call us at 800-338-4005 or apply online today!

Someone should give these guys a call. I know they will insure some bat poop crazy cars for agreed upon values and I see they also list boats. Worth a shot...

Thanks for the suggestion. But already called them, no good.

He did the original design. But the hull that Polaris produced was modified (to the bad) of his original design. Seabold did the hull construction under contract by Polaris.

I was trying to figure out why the name Seabold highway seems so familiar. Randy's shop is on Seabold Highway.
