Thanks man.

why am I reinforcing the firewall? - Just cuz I was told that this was an area that I should reinforce... I don't really know why to be honest.

I was told to just do the firewall down to just above the intermediate shaft.

I don't know about the firewall, but the newer SJ need it right at the bulkhead/firewall area to the bottom of the hull. The newer ones are thin and crack there sometimes, if you ride hard enough.

15 hours of work today.... reinforcement is complete except for just glassing in the footholds and throwing one layer in the tray....

layed about the equiv. of 3 layers of 1708 in the nose

1 layer of 1708 on the bulkhead and both sides all the way to up to the nose

then 1 layer 5.7 oz carbon fiber on the bulkhead up to the nose

The last one looks a little sketchy as far as the how far the carbon fiber stretches out into the nose area... but I did not want to spend the extra time and money to put carbon into areas that nobody would ever see unless the gas tank was out... figured this is what most people do.... I prob put it farther up than some would have

I dont know if other people do this, but I put the carbon fiber in and the edges where kinda un-sano so I used carbon fiber tape which stays nice and shaped and put it around all the edges after I was done which made it look nice.

I bought my ski a week ago and had it apart within a couple of hours of having it home. My wife wont come out and say it but she thinks I'm crazy. She don't know what to think about my hobby.

Looks good Eric... nice job.

Thanks... I am pretty happy with the way it turned out. I'm sure a professional would have done a few things different, but for a first timer I think it came out sweet!

Do you guys sand around the edges of the hood where the fiberglass sticks over the edge and then spread a little resin over where you sanded? How do you get that edge looking nice....

nah, you did a nice job.

maybe hit the hood lip area with a dremmel (with a sanding drum) to smooth it all up. just to keep from getting stabbed by the stringers hanging off.

Yeah.. dremmel should work good... a lot more precise than my 2" air grinder...

Did you get the carbon fiber tape from US Composites too?

Yeah I got the tape from US composites.

I put the carbon fiber 2x2 twill on the sides all the way to the bottom, and it kinda had frayed edges onto the bottom which I didnt like... I used the tape to cover the edges... the 2" tape worked perfect to cover that first hump on the bottom which covered all the frayed edges...

when I put the fiberglass down I extended it onto the bottom about 2" so the tape covered that up too...

i could have possibly cut the carbon fiber cloth to extend onto the bottom, but I didnt... so it was nice to have the tape to kinda touch it up..

Today I got the remainder of the reinforcing done...

Also, I bought a Wamilon lowered hood on ebay... its used but in pretty decent shape from the looks of it... plan on painting it white.

With the paint, bracket, and nose piece I look at having a real nice lowered hood setup for under 500 bucks. Fair deal... considering they have them on sale for 900 bucks at 18% off at wamiltons....

Bastard!!! wondered who got that one. nice job.

oh, and holy tray reinforcement batman!! yeah, the milky color has happened to me a few times too.

did you brush a thin coat of epoxy down before you laid the glass?

hehe... you're not the other guy that was bidding on it where you? I was hoping nobody else would want it, so I could get it for a steal... still got a fair deal though....

i was watching it and planned to bid with under 30 sec left, but when it shop up i bailed without ever bidding.

I have a stock hood I cut the liner out of, and I plan to cut it into a lowered hood as soon as i get the nose piece from Goose to line the hood up with.

Yeah I put a coat of epoxy down before and then another on top of the glass and then rolled the crap out of it.... the only thing I could think of is that perhaps the epoxy began to setup in those little areas before I started rolling and would not absorb all the way into the middle of the thick 1708 cloth... I don't know if I should be worried about it or not... white spots just freak me out since I don't have a ton of experience doing fiberglass... glad it didnt happen anywhere else... if I do have to do something drastic to fix it at least it's in the easiest area to get to...

by holy tray reinforcement... does that mean I went a little overkill? hahaha

you should be ok... i wouldn't worry about it.

yeah, i usually only reinforce between the footholds, but that's cool... you'll be all set now.

Looks really good...
