First AR!!!!!!!!

The 5.56 has a little too much powder to completely burn in a 16” barrel. It loses power and makes a lot of noise. A non magnified sight makes it hard to take full advantage of the 5.56 range potential. Plus 9mm is half the price and it won’t damage cheap steel targets. Best of all, you can shoot it at the pistol range!

I feel like it’s not even worth replying this if you are implying that a 16” barrel does nothing but make noise, that is ridiculous. There are literally endless use cases for any configuration of ar15. If your use requires a musket length barrel to gain back your fraction of full potential bullet velocity and a high powered optic, no one is taking that away from you.
Also 5.56 is one of the cheapest rifle rounds there is, who cares?

With 55 grain bullets you will lose 170fps and its noticeably louder when comparing 16" to a 20" barrel. I was thinking more in terms of efficiency and practical use. I don't think many buyers see an AR as anything but another cool toy. As for cheap, it wasn't long ago a new SKS was under $100 and ammo was less than 10 cents a shot.

I would venture the say the vast majority of ARs built are less than 20” for many reasons and would argue that if it didn’t constitute an SBR, people would go even shorter, regularly. 170fps is negligible to many people considering that’s only what, 5-8% drop of total bullet velocity using round numbers? In general, It hardly affects one’s ability to shoot nearly as far as they really want. Maneuverability, weight, use case, length with suppressor, etc etc. I would argue that a 16” is much more practical for an all around use rifle than 20.

As smitty just said, that’s the beauty in AR’s. Build whatever you want, they all work great. If you want to talk about something that impractical, you should see my 8.5” 300BLK upper that shoots only subs for the range .

The gun hobby has a flavor of the week vibe like everything else that is popular. People like to buy hardware more than they like to practice using it. Back when ARs were too expensive for the masses, they weren't modified very much. Now every 18 yo is mounting telephones, cameras, and rear view mirrors on them. My favorite 5.56 AR is a 1970s pencil barreled Colt. All it needs is a good set of eyes.

And here I am just wishing people would build things other then AR's regardless of the caliber.....

Kevbo is going to absolutely despise this, shield your eyes dude.

I want to build a space cowboy lever action so bad. Like this:

Love my lever actions! Someday I will build or buy a nice 45-70 that can handle big boy loads. Had a 458 Socom but want something that can handle the 500g boolets.

Now that im older I agree more with Kevin now and base my shooting on ease of cleaning and price of ammo. Lots of 10/22 builds.
