Super Jet Flyinb501's RN SJ shortened hull and defoam thread

In addtion to the hull mods I'm also going to be installing a 771cc Dasa and an Xmetal trim.

I'll start with some pictures from the paint job last year...

And now on to the defoam and shortening. Lots of wet foam! I cut 2" off and avoided the ride plate inserts. I also trimmed off the rear lip.

Filled in the bond line with chopped strand and resin from US Composites, and began to glue the rear pieces back on.

771cc DASA long block with ATP EPIC ignition and stock lightened flywheel compliments of pabloescobar!

I'll also be installing an Xmetal trim with an 85 mm bored Raider exit nozzle from #zero. Hopefully my 9/15 Hooker works nicely with this setup!

I picked up a bathroom scale so I could try and weigh this thing. I didn't get a before weight, but currently everything is weighing in at 158 lbs. This is everything except the motor, pump, gas tank, battery, ebox, and exhaust. Does that sound about right?

What is the point of shortening half the rear...? Your ride plate will still be mounted in the oem location.....and will ride like you never did anything at all.

I'm interested in ur ride report when ur done. I think you'll have a noticeable ride difference over stock with shortening on the strakes and getting rid of the rear lip. I would do an aggressive D cut to the ride plate to help take advantage of the shortening. The original paint job looks great. Nice work. Keep posting.

Half the rear? I'd say it's more like 90%. I got the idea from SJBritt. That is how he did it, and it seemed like the most hassle free way to do it to me. He said it made a huge difference. I'm not sure what you mean about the ride plate mounting. Isn't it going to be mounted in the same location no matter what? I don't see how you could move it forward? I can modify the plate itself however I want.

Looks like you left two giant rudders in the rear of your ski. I was not talking about moving the rideplate mount. I'm talking about not being able to truely shorten your hull by much being as you left the pump tunnel basically at stock length. If you really wanted to do it the easy way why didnt you just do a deep D cut on your ride plate.....? By not cutting it past that last rideplate bolt it does not look like it will ride any shorter than a stock length ski with a D cut plate.....And you cant modify the plate however you want because you are now limited by the rest of the hull you left hanging out the back.....thats what I was getting at.....
I just shortened my SJ by 4 inches..... Your ride plate is still gonna be out by the steer nozzle with all that pump tunnel you left. All i'm sayin is you should have chopped the rest off then you could truely mess with the length by just adjusting your plate length.

Agree to disagree. I guess we'll just have to see how she rides. The good news is I can always take off more if I want, but if I chopped off too much I wouldn't be able to go back. I'm not trying to set up a flat water ski here. Thanks for the comments though.

Damn those waves are big. I grew up in Ohio and spent quite a bit of time on Erie and Michigan and never got waves that big. Looks fun.

It was on the ski when I bought it. I thought it was just a Worx intake grate. I guess it's a pump stuffer / grate combo? I'm pretty sure it's one piece, but I'd have to check it out when I get home.

What am I supposed to yank out?

I had one of those a while back and just cut the stuffer off of the grate, worked just fine.
