Using the two pieces is a bit easier and less stressful. I've done both and getting a single piece with no wrinkles or tears is difficult...not impossible. This was my first two piece job on the gunwales. I think from here on out Ill do it this way. Way back when, someone gave me some knowledge and they said: "The best turf job is one YOU didn't have to do." I hate turf above all other jobs on a ski. MAJOR PITA.

How do you make the seam where the top and the bottom of hold meet not open up over time. Do you adhere the 2 pieces of turf together and then trim?

Totally agree on the PITA. Turfing is by far the worst job.

Yes, contact cement all the way to both edges and adhere the "lips" to each other. The trick seems to be to make sure the seam is above the friction area where your foot/leg/ankle contexts the hold.

I start with the bottom/inside of foothold piece first. I will have a heat gun laying in tray blowing into foothold. I have it precut with about 3" of where I anticipate the overlap. Once I mold it to the interior of foothold, I push it up along the leading edge of the hold to where the turf is adhered and pointing upward. Next I go to top side and work outside to inside and bring the bottom piece up to meet the topside and simply pinch the two together. Trim with knife and smooth with dremel.

Yes going to wrap my holds together with contact cement then trim it. Yes turf is a major PITA and time consuming.

This last batch of turf I got was suspect. One sheet was the good, old standard issue black diamond with usual thickness. I ordered another sheet to use for another ski. I don't know of HT is changing their formula or if this is knock-off HT. Its thinner overall and the grooves between the diamonds look to have a been imprinted or textured from some process other than the usual "cut" diamonds. I guess it could be molded rather than cut. Being thinner material, I bet it conforms easier with less heat but durability is my concern. I think this last sheet came from hot products.

I ordered two black molded diamond sheets straight from hydroturf, and they have that weird texture in between the diamonds as well. It's definitely different.

The molded diamond turf pattern is pressed with heat. It's going to look different that cut diamond turf
That's not what we're saying. They changed how molded diamond looks. I might have a scrap of the old molded diamond to compare to the new.

The new turf seems more flexible too.

I think you did an excellent job on your freak. I wasn't putting down your turf job at all or saying mine was better cuz it isn't.
I think rose was just asking why people have trended towards having separate pieces on the top and sometimes the bottom of the holds. I have only turfed 5 skiis so I am far from an expert.

Guess that came out wrong (sorry!) l guess what l was trying to say is in order to turf a foothold with a lot of extra padding would almost be impossible to do in one piece. Not saying it couldn't be done but tough to do.

I'm going to be using a ton of padding as well including on the sides and other places on the hold, and maybe I won't do it all in one piece. On my first time turfing holds, I didn't leave an extra amount of turf to go to the bottom of the holds, and I feel like if I was turfing a similar hold again I could probably do it in one piece. They were oldstyle toby's and they had an extra like 2 inches of a half inch deep toehold extending from the front of the foothold, and that was impossible to transition with one piece, but if they didn't have that, I could probably do it in one piece..

Can you guys take a picture of the inside of the hold when you're using two pieces? I kinda wanna see some more detailed pics of the seam, etc. It looks actually pretty good that way..

Oldstyle holds the patch is for where just change the patch
Impressive! Looks like you could have covered that little visible glass if you had some extra turf, or would it probably almost crease there? That bend was annoying on those holds lol.
So are you starting to turf holds in two pieces as well now?
