I missed the point until Vumad spoke up.
At 7k a month you could afford to pickup a drug habit, and still have an A/M hull.

There was a thread where people posted their job/employment might be a good search.

I got out of debt, bought a used carbon SF hull few summers back as soon as i had extra cash. Even worked out a fast track payment plan when one came up for sale, didnt go into debt to build it up. Saved money everywhere i could (drive to fl to pickup, used parts off the forum) Looking back, had i invested and waited, i might have a way nicer hull now. But more likely something entirely different with the money. Your Interests can change quickly, especially with any type of loss, or sudden changes. So be careful buying new, and the pitfalls losing your azz if ever you have to liquidate

I'm a mech engineer for an oil and gas manufacturing company. I don't make $7k a month (almost) but I have a pretty sweet square nose. My wife and I are also debt free, save probably 50% of our income a month and are looking to buy a house. I could buy a built superfreak today with cash if I wanted to.... For now I'm happy to ride my beater SJ. Once I master backflipping an unmodified SN (hull wise) I'll probably buy a used AM hull and switch everything over to it. It's all about decisions. It does crack me up how many $10k+ skis I see for sale a few months after they've been purchased, with reasons for selling including having a baby, losing a job etc... I'll say right now, we're planning on buying a house and having a baby but my skis aren't going anywhere.

All about dedication. When your soo hooked on a sport like a drug u figure it out. Tweakers find a way to get dope. Most of us here find a way to get a ski. Loans credit cards whatever. I owe a lil on my ski still but I wouldn't change a thing. I have a kid. A house. Multiple vehicles.....just gotta figure it out. I had alot of Skiis and 31 I own a sick ass hull and can't get enough. Jet Skiis are my drug haha

Ive never had a real job. I am 22, Graduated college, being lazy as hell. I think I have been out of school about 9 months, maybe pulled in like 600 bucks so far. Get to do whatever the hell i want during the day and I have a 22k ski (so obviously I go to the lake quite a bit lol). Its about being good with YOUR money, my ski is all mine and money i have earned with other money. I have saved money up and have been fortunate to grow up in the family I did. Like I said, the ski is mine not mommy or daddy's. I invest the small amount of money I have, partly skill and partly lucky deals. I just started looking for a job two weeks ago and summer is coming up quick (just my luck). One day I will do something I am good at, hopefully help other people with skills I think I posses, and be able to have the freedom for family and jet sking. While most of my friends got drunk on the weekend and blew through 30-100 bucks a night, I was looking for investments and working an under the table job while people were sleeping off their hangovers. Not bragging at all with my success or my laziness but it is something that can be done if its a top priority. I started on a js550 all stock, now i have an 1105 DVX. Work hard, think harder, and play the hardest ;)

Good luck in the AM hull game and be patient. My third year and 3rd hull. Riding skills and kick ass equipment don't appear over night. I was once in your shoes. Goal is for my first brand new ski next year!

My best advise is if your job is seasonal and you are only 21, do not buy an AM hull. Save every dollar you can. And then in 10 years when you are living comfortably you can consider it. That's how.

The below is not my story, it's an old story I copied from another website...

The businessman and the fisherman.

There was once a businessman who was sitting by the beach in a small Brazilian village.
As he sat, he saw a Brazilian fisherman rowing a small boat towards the shore having caught quite few big fish.
The businessman was impressed and asked the fisherman, “How long does it take you to catch so many fish?”
The fisherman replied, “Oh, just a short while.”
“Then why don’t you stay longer at sea and catch even more?” The businessman was astonished.
“This is enough to feed my whole family,” the fisherman said.
The businessman then asked, “So, what do you do for the rest of the day?”
The fisherman replied, “Well, I usually wake up early in the morning, go out to sea and catch a few fish, then go back and play with my kids. In the afternoon, I take a nap with my wife, and evening comes, I join my buddies in the village for a drink — we play guitar, sing and dance throughout the night.”

The businessman offered a suggestion to the fisherman.
“I am a PhD in business management. I could help you to become a more successful person. From now on, you should spend more time at sea and try to catch as many fish as possible. When you have saved enough money, you could buy a bigger boat and catch even more fish. Soon you will be able to afford to buy more boats, set up your own company, your own production plant for canned food and distribution network. By then, you will have moved out of this village and to Sao Paulo, where you can set up HQ to manage your other branches.”

The fisherman continues, “And after that?”
The businessman laughs heartily, “After that, you can live like a king in your own house, and when the time is right, you can go public and float your shares in the Stock Exchange, and you will be rich.”
The fisherman asks, “And after that?”
The businessman says, “After that, you can finally retire, you can move to a house by the fishing village, wake up early in the morning, catch a few fish, then return home to play with kids, have a nice afternoon nap with your wife, and when evening comes, you can join your buddies for a drink, play the guitar, sing and dance throughout the night!”
The fisherman was puzzled, “Isn’t that what I am doing now?”

classic Brazilian story, probably also present in other cultures. Someone found the English version, but I could not identify the translator

This is a young mans sport, and life is about balance. make good investments, but don't miss out.

An aftermarket hull doesn't had to be a brand new 1400 DVX. It can be a used rickter with a b-pipe.

....my very short yet precise answer..." we cant afford it "....and I am sure many others are in the same boat :0) and just wont admit it, because in all honesty the return on the investment is not tangible in $$'s ....

But we make it work, where there is a will....
This ^ I can't afford it, but I have an addiction so I will continue to not afford it, every time I try to bring it down to an affordable level I relapse and buy something new.

I sold a vehicle that I had lost interest to help fund my aftermarket hull build. Not even two years later I sold the hull and will be returning to a squarenose or roundnose. Not because I can't afford it but because I didn't enjoy it like a stockish hull.

Yah I get this. Ever since going A/M or modified, I lost the ability to ride for hours uninterrupted just cruising a whole lake and having fun. The sport became "4 minutes of fun 15 min of rest or tinkering". Which is okay just...would be nice to have a second ski to play on.

Everybody around here has gone to the 5 minute ski's..... No More taking off up river until we have half a tank and then turn back praying we dont run out of gas. You know what happens when you catch a boat going the opposite direction, you turn back and chase after it. then you really limp back praying you make it. Many times we did not. I miss those days. That is when riding was fun. I still have my SJ. I keep thinking about getting an AM Hull. But just have not been able to pull the trigger because of Finances and also "Do I really want one?"

I honestly could be just as happy building up a Stock Class Superjet to just rip up the lake.
