How do you afford this sport?

I made it my priority over my other interests! Sold off some other toys, got rid of the girlfriend, stopped going out to bars etc..

I work as much as I can and ride as much as I can.

Time well spent!

In all reality this sport is cheaper than many other motor sports. Unless you're really pushing the limits or competing regularly you don't need the top equipment.(in any sport)

I built a ski that will shred the surf, boat wakes, salt marsh and so on. Hopefully I can add a flatwater flip into the mix!

Everybody around here has gone to the 5 minute ski's..... No More taking off up river until we have half a tank and then turn back praying we dont run out of gas. You know what happens when you catch a boat going the opposite direction, you turn back and chase after it. then you really limp back praying you make it. Many times we did not. I miss those days. That is when riding was fun. I still have my SJ. I keep thinking about getting an AM Hull. But just have not been able to pull the trigger because of Finances and also "Do I really want one?"

I honestly could be just as happy building up a Stock Class Superjet to just rip up the lake.
I do miss the old days as well. This is my last attempt of trying to enjoy an A/M ski and stroker. Next will be a SJ/701 that I can give to craps about. Huck it off any wave and not worry that it may end at the bottom of the lake. Beach the crap out of it,sink it ,run it on the ragged edge of destruction knowing that I can get 4 motors for the cost of 1 stroker rebuild.

Why is that?
The day I turned 18 the bank gave me 1k credit limit. Me being a special kind of stupid that I am it didn't go so well then after that I got collections on probably 3 or 4 different phone company's I was pretty stupid. I payed them all of a few months ago so i have no debt now but got a nice credit score of 486

Well, glad you learned a very hard lesson. My advice to you would be to go to your bank and ask for a Secured Credit Card. Will have a very low limit, but will help rebuild your credit. Credit Scores are much more important than jetskis!

That is why you have two skis. Reinforced SJ river/surf ski. and an a/m ski for going in circles. :)

This! Start building that credit back up now. You are going to need it when you are wanting to buy a house.

At 16 I got my first ski, a 1995 square with a B pipe, trailer, cover and some other stuff for 300$. Got addicted, and just about every penny I make goes to skis.
Work 50 hr weeks in the summer, weekends and some other nights during school year , and occasionally flip parts. I'm 20 now. I also get to live at home through college and don't have to pay rent, some food, but still have to pay car insurance, gas, other food, phone bill, etc.
Spoiler alert! I only have my am hull because I have awesome parents and they let me setup a payment plan instead of takeout a bank loan. My total loss, lay down pipe, mag pump, built 701, is all paid for. But, I still am soaking in student loans.. But those can wait, lol.
To anyone other than jetskiers I've made stupid decisions with my money.. Where there's a will, there a way. To me, an am hull completely livened up the sport, and you can build a very nice one for under 10k and the average person will be content for quite a while.

Also...when you do get a credit card, dont exceed 40% utilization rate. Ideally, dont exceed 30% utilization rate. Utilization rate is Balance Due divided by Available credit. So if you have a $1000 limit, dont exceed 300-400 carry balance.

I had this whole financial advise post written up and was going to post up here for all the tax time ballers, and how they should responsibly blow the money that they dont have, but I figured I would have pissed off a lot of people and broken some dreams.

You are spot on about the 30%!!! Also once you get a card never close it...makes it seem like you don't need the credit...just renegotiate terms and try for an increased balance.

A few years ago my wife wanted to start using a Disney Card to build up points so we could take our little girl to Disney. We had not had a credit card in years, other than one she had since before we met which only has a 500.00 limit. Well, for many months we bought groceries, paid it off......... then not sure what happened, we got careless and bam. Lets just say I was not happy when I realized how bad it had gotten. We hit some bad luck and had expenses that we were not expecting, add to the card. About 9 months ago I had enough and we had the money in savings. I told her to just pay the damn card off. We have a small balance on that card now, Had to have suspension work done and used the card for it. But other than that almost no balance again. We have done the run a balance up before and then struggle to pay off. Everybody has just about. I have gotten very frugal about spending money now. I have gotten to where if I have 200.00 in play money, It will just sit in my wallet for months. Just dont want to spend it. Yeah, I get the urge sometimes. I have been wanting a GoPro and almost got one several times. But I am not going to sit down and do all that editing. So, I wont pull the trigger.
