How do you afford this sport?

Who's buying am hulls at 21? I would bet most people are much older and much more established.

People say they can't afford a $6K hull or a $20k build but then have 3 or 4 $1000- $1500 skis sitting in the garage, an extra vehicle or two and who knows what other toys. Sell them all and just have one good ski, that's what I did.

I had 9 skis in the garage that I had bought and built up with am parts over a 10 year period. I sold or parted a few out and put the money towards building up one good surf ski. That went so well, I sold the rest and build a second one with an AM hull and SS865 motor and gave the first build to my wife. Less clutter around the house now and way less wrenching.
OCD is right, I didn't get my first AM hull until I was 45!!!!

Budget yourself.
I stopped buying beer and smokes, you can spend a lot of unnecessary money on food, and I sold all my other toys just to afford it(I could not afford having multiple machines and I decided to stick with skiing). While currently going to school for engineering. I'm going to wait to save for an AM hull until I graduate and get settled.

I think everyone completely missed the op question. He in no way, shape or form indicated that he could not afford the hull. He quite clearly stated he could afford it almost immediately. I think he made it clear that he has a solid income.

He's not asking how he can get the money to afford a bull. He's asking how other people get the money.

Are you an engineer? Doctor? Do you selectively manage your finances making sacrifices other places to afford a hull? Most people are the last category. He's more in the first 2.

I don't think he meant to make a poopstorm of jealously or to be condescending.

My kids eat rice and beans and wear old clothes so I can afford this sport!

A lot of us don't bank roll. You make a lot more at 21 than a lot of us do now. However, we all make choices. I passed on my potential to be a doctor or engineer to be firefighter. I had the grades but wanted a family. I could have had a hull at 21 making $10k/yr (I earned scholarships) but I started saving for a house when I started working at 14.

I love everything mechanical on my day off. My mom was talking to me this week about my potential. However, I saved or improved several lives since I started. Example, I cared for a lady the other day that I resuscitated 5 years ago and 4.5 of those years have been very happy and healthy. I had my first field delivery 3 months ago and they brought that little girl to see us a month later. I have my own 2mo little girl now. I considered changing careers, but building cars wouldn't give me the joy my current job does.

I can afford what I afford by making good financial decisions, buying used and turning my own wrenches.

Actually, that need to balance budgets and do my work has contributed substantially to my skills in rescue and extrication, and as a pump operator. Believe it or not, Jet skis facilitates a learning for me that translates to real life job skills that positively impact the lives of the people a serve. I offer to bring new firefighters to the lake as a fun way to teach pump dynamics and flow.

Like the guy off grandmas boy.. "Their my roommates not my parents there's a difference I pay rent!"

Actually i started working when i was 9 doing a paper route, then at 15 i started at McD's, i had 3 jobs around 17 working for live production companies and i was also self employed to.. I saved and bought stuff. I had a lot of money invested into different things, sold all those things and got to where i am today... I hardly put any of my own money from working into purchasing jet ski stuff, i sell what i have from what i bought as a kid. right now i pay rent, car insurance, snap on, phone bill, groceries and other odds and ends.

Bust my ass off to love and enjoy this sport. I dont regret any of it

I was 17 self employed rigging my own stuff with insurance. Lets say i had huge dreams that were going well.. but i sold all my Sound, Lighting equipment and became a mechanic. I blame my father he made me start mowing the lawn when i was 7, what an a$$hole ;). I started loving anything with a motor!

you are the reason
Sell your body nightly. One part at a time I got stuff. I've always been a frugal one. Example:Instead of paying for a brake job I researched and did my own brake jobs. Saved money, robbed Peter to pay Paul so to speak. Wanted A carbon hull or different things changed on a ski so I learned how to do composites to make whatever I want. Rich with money No!! Rich in spirit. Ya that's it. Keep on keepin on.

Well, I got my first a/m hull when I was 24. I don't make a ton of money, I slowly built up to it, didn't take out a loan, silly to get a loan on toys imo. I built up a superjet over the years then transfered all the parts, now have a pretty decent ski.
