How many surf riders have a surfing background?

One of the things that is great about surfing is that it is hard to learn. Keeps alot of the lops outta da wata.

Apparently it's not hard enough, every decent spot is ridiculously over crowded. I cringe when forum members want to expose jet ski surf riding to the masses at the X games in hopes that it will go mainstream like surfing. They have no clue of the can of worms they want to open

42 years on and off surfing, yes it helps with surf riding but I saw guys rip at Pismo that never surfed .

Im not sure of thier background but I will say, watching Tomski from Havasu, Mark Murphy from the Midwest and Neil from Colorado shred the surf like they do is amazing. Those guys live farther than me from the ocean and they FRIGGIN RIP!

I'm with you Charlie , Tanman was riding like he surfed, Mark is a pro freestyle BMX guy and I'm sure rips on anything . I really liked watching everyones style , side slipping down the face control master Sticks to Andrews duct tape the throttle WFO attack and everything between.

Thanks Charlie! I really appreciate the nod of approval. However I don't think I deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as Murf and Tom... those guys flat rip!!! They have been doing it a long time, and make it look like they live on the beach!

As for my background: Riding since I was 12ish - started on a 1974 JS 400... yep! Started racing at 15 on a 550SX. (I know how to turn!!!) Raced until 2002, finishing on the Polaris Octane that I was Riding at Pismo.

First time I rode in surf was 1998 at the San Diego (Coronado) National Tour race. Was hooked ever since. Quit racing and started going for surf any time I can get it. (Not nearly often enough) :frown:. So definitely no surfing background for me, and I'm sure it shows... but I learn more every time I'm out there! LOVE IT!

Neil,
You looked good on that Octane this year. I can't wait for you to get out there on the freak though. We got some rare clean surf here last week and I had a blast out there. It still shocks me how you can put that ski anywhere on the wave and ride away.

A few years ago when I was out at Pismo for the first time I could really see the difference in how you west coast guys ride. The style and knowlege of the wave is far different from most riders I had watched. Yet at the same time there is such a huge variety of styles out there. some guys charge hard and some guys truly have unreal finesse.

I've never surfed before but I would really like to try it sometime. Maybe one of these days...

The simple fact about riding in the surf is you can go out there on a stock or lightly modified ski and have a great time. You really don't need high horsepower, big mag pumps, lowered hoods, expensive poles, or all these high dollar hulls. Obviously there is a market for this stuff and that's great for some people.

Sure they can be more fun at times but sometimes simple is better!

I've been attempting to surf my whole life
I still suck at it
However , all the water time just serves to make you all the more comfortable on your ski , it gives
you valuable wave knowledge

Surfing is so fun.I take my wife on surf trips. That's funny when your in the water the whole day away from your bride. Riding a ski in the surf is great because you have a throttle to give you momentum at will.Getting the most from a wave (finding momentum)IMG_0852.jpgIMG_0873.jpg when surfing offers a challenge that will keep you going back for more.

I have yet to try and stand on a surf board. I don't live where there is surf, and when im at the surf I just want to jetski. I have some learning to do

I surfed or tried to surf a few times, but I lived too far from the beach and Skating was much more accessible for me so I skated ramps a lot when I was young... I have always noticed that guys who could surf were so much better so much faster than people like myself who had not.

Perfect example is Ross Champion. His first time in the surf was w/ us at Daytona and he was amazing all of us at how well he could work the waves... He was good quicker than anyone I had ever seen till this day. I helped him learn flips and it was history from there...

Never surfed before but i always grew up around water and boats. I think i read waves pretty good. Last summer was my first solid season of stand up surf riding (went out pretty much every weekend) and i can surf, pull rolls, stabs, re-entries pretty well. Ended the season going for backflips, but haven't landed one clean yet. I really wish i got into surfing and/or stand ups when i was a little younger.
