too many loopholes such as; how do we know the person isnt going to sell it within a week? if i hold the title for it and someone gets hurt on it, im responsible for it. etc....

1/3 to snackem
1/3 to the jk fund
1/3 to the X for hosting fees

does this sound good to everybody? open to suggestions.[/quote]

in this post you have decided how to split the fund.
then open for suggestion and I voiced mine but it is not what you wanted to hear.

you have time why can't you just scope out some young up and comers who have crappy skis or kids who ride but don't have a ride of their own. with all the brains here you can't find a way to make some poor kid happy? I guess I am just too thick to give up when I should- I would press on and find a way to make the original plan happen.

People can donate to those causes if they choose to without the ski and while it is a very nice gesture- I was really hoping you pulled this off, cause I wanted to volunteer to do it next year, its a cool idea and I would like to see it live on.( if it works this year)

at some point the ski will get sold or modded and you will have to deal with it sooner or later. maybe get a contract signed or something, have people suggest someone they know who is deserving and in need?

Its your deal, I just think of what it would be like to be a young guy and win a ski!! either way your gesture is very cool. I hope it all goes smoothly,

I can chip in on the driveshaft if anyone is selling. maybe I can secure a new one quickly.

you were saying to give the money back to pwctoday. that didnt make any sense and i explained why.

then you were talking about giving raffle tickets to the donors. WTF is the point of donating if you expect something in return??? again, bad idea IMO.

its not that your opinion is not what i wanted to hear. i simply disagree with them and stated the reasons why. dont get all bent out of shape because i dont agree with you.

then theres this whole "liability" thing you keep mentioning. you didnt want to donate the hull because of this "liability". tell me, how did selling it to rick for $50 absolve you of said "liability", if there was even any to begin with?

for every hour of work ive put into this thing, ive tripled it in thinking about what should be done with the funds and how the funds would be aquired. just because im "open to suggestions", it doesnt mean that im going to DO everything that i see on my screen.

tom, that was the original plan, and it would be great if it could work out. but, how do you keep someone from selling something thats legally theirs without getting into all kinds of legal crap? what if someone wins it and ends up never using it? how do we KNOW it will go into appreciative hands?

there are a lot of people looking for a good sj. it could be raffled off only to people that are looking or a silent auction and highest bid wins it. there are enough people that would spend the money for a good square. we could start a thread for people that are looking for a ski and let the silent auction begin and the ski be given at the daytona ride. people could vouch for the non ski owners that are bidding. get a thread on both sites. just a suggestion.

Moondance

Just plain me....
A silent auction sounds like way too much trouble. Like Charlie said, sell tickets to whomever wants to buy them. What they do with it after that is up to them. They money still gets to the right causes.

Here's a crazy idea.
Set up an ebay auction to end about the same time as the raffle and let the ebay vultures have it.
With so many people in Daytona from all over the country maybe shipping could be arranged.

.........or not.

thats not too crazy an idea. ive thought about that as well. itd need to be a reserve auction. problem is, it will need to be finished at least 2 weeks before the ride which is putting even more time constraint on me. i say this because its hard to sell a "running ski" that hasnt been fully assembled and with an auction, there should be pics of the 'complete' ski.

if i do happen to finish it 2 wks before the ride, i might just ebay it and see if it hits the reserve. if it doesnt, itll go to daytona for the raffle.....

just seems kinda 'last-minutey' to do it that way. it could work though.

Giving the ski to a kid was a nice idea but not a very well-laid plan. If you think through the logistics it's a nightmare.

A kid who is between 14 and 16 who is at Daytona and already has their boater's license but does not have a ski, but does have an empty trailor bunk to take the ski home (I know I wouldn't want to have to deal with shipping it)... that kind of narrows the field.

This doesn't even touch on the legalities of giving a ski to a kid with any sort of contract in mind.

If it's raffled, the benefit and the feeling of good-will cannot be stolen by a kid selling the ski for profit. The money is collected and distributed and those that needed and received it can do with it what they like, whether the new owner sells the ski or not.

why can't you just scope out some young up and comers who have crappy skis or kids who ride but don't have a
ride of their own. with all the brains here you can't find a way to make some poor kid happy?
1. You give this thing to a junior rider and ONE person benefits. That one person is not even necessarily a person "in need"."Some poor kid" can't afford to maintain a jetski, unless by "poor kid" you mean "a kid deprived of their own jetski"... in which case, meh, I'm not impressed.

2. You dangle a free ski in front of a bunch of "poor kids" without a ski and only one gets it. Sounds more like a way to make a bunch of kids unhappy.

3. "Young up-and-comers" already have AT LEAST a 701 square or better. The last junior rider I saw at an amateur freestyle competition was riding a wammer ski.

These are just my thoughts. Don't let this stop you from attempting your own giveaway in the future. Perhaps I'm too short-sighted.

I personally cannot think of better recipients than two of our own and the board that allows this sort of thing to happen.

4. i dont really have time to scope the country for some poor kid in need of a ski. then what about shipping? hows a poor kid going to afford shipping if he flew in from moose taint, idaho. i dont really feel like building a crate and spending my $400 to ship it.

5. how poor is this kid? if hes at the ride, he probably came with a parent. they cant afford a ski but they can afford a small vacation in daytona?

6. what would the qualifications be? good grades? thinks jetskis are cool? uncle had one in the 80's?

:haha:

seriously, ive spoken with quite a few different people about this and the direction im going still seems to me to be the best choice of the options ive seen.

too bad it can't be given to the jr life gaurds group. then all of them would get a chance to learn to ride. i imagine there would still be liabilities.

the jr lifeguard league already benefits more than anyone else from this ride. they could always show up to the ride and buy some raffle tickets or some of the attendees could buy some tickets in their name. honestly, ive never even heard of the jr lifeguard league outside of the daytona rides.:dunno:

I was told by Chris Nowvinski that the Jr. Lifeguards / Explorers will be helping w/ registrations this year... It's not a leauge, but a division of Volusia County Beaches. They teach kids water safety and basic life skills type stuff... We paid for an enclosed trailer and a bunch of paddle boards ect.. last year. The trailer will be onsite at the ride so people can see where there donations are going... It's a good opportunity for kids to learn responsibility too...

nick, thanks for the info. i was trying to google what they actually do and couldnt find much info on them. didnt mean to sound ig'nant. ive lived here my entire life and never heard of them before the daytona rides.

so the jr lifeguards are kids, that get taught water safety by adults, then pass it down to other kids? so its kids teaching kids, right?

I was right in the middle of a reply last night when my hamstring cramped up. so I hop out of the chair and try and stretch it out when my abs start cramping too( riding today first time in 3 months). so I am hobbling around like the elephant man trying to stretch in two opposite directions at the same time - not being successful all the while groaning and cursing. my wife and kids all run in only to watch helplessly- not sure if they should laugh or if its serious or what!?

anyway while I am locked in a life or death struggle to ease the tense muscles I asked my wife to finish my reply- tell her the story and she says I am an idiot! "why would you give a ski to a young kid to go and kill himself?" she is right as are you all.

SO I guess the toughest decision is who are you going to help and who gets left out in the cold. Too many great places to help out and only a little bit of money to stretch to do it. I like the path you are on. its your baby, I would just try to make sure it is actually handled properly and not just thrown in the crowd like some of the small items last year. That kind of put me off from getting any tickets this year.

Its a great idea and a some great causes. those who do so much and ask for nothing in return.

Now - lets get a driveshaft so Charlie can finish.
