Iam running flap and ball scuppers in one tube

Location
Stockton
So I decided to buy a ball scupper and run it along with the flap scupper. My theory is if the flap fails and rips off the ball scupper will come into play and save the day.

Well my theory worked lol. Only a bolt came out and it's washer held my scupper flap open.....

The set up worked so well I Had no idea I was in danger, didn't notice a damn thing. Wasn't until I got back & went to disconnect my battery and discovered the missing bolt and stuck open flap. Red Loctite for that bolt from now on lol

Rotated pics :(

Been chasing a damn exhaust leak for over a month. Went to Jacksonville, it was really rough, lot of low speed riding, ski ran like crap, "well, did not fix the leak"......... Came home, pulled the motor, replaced gaskets.............. test....................... leak, ordered new exhaust hoses................. went to the Southern Fried Freeride, It leaked, but got worse at slow speeds. Chasing cruisers it is fine. Guess what, I have the Versa Plug Max in there........... And, I removed the Flap a while back to try and see how it it did at keeping water out. Well, it lets water in, alot. So, leaking around the orings most likely. And............. Getting tons of exhaust at slower speeds......................... We even discussed "Could it be getting sucked in thru the scupper"....................... Pluck Me Running.................... @Sanoman @hornedogg79 @JetManiac @Kaylee.S @Jr. @jo5hi3 @OtherDonnieGuy @Aquaholic

The other thing is limited air supply to the engine bay? All you have on an edge is pole breathers. Not enough supply. The suction is great enough to pull the ball open, and suck the exhaust in. Easy test is to install an expandable pipe plug from inside the hull and go ride

Lol! The ball operates the other way, sucken would pull the ball in and close the valve...

No, It sucks air in around the tubes going into the hull, because a little water gets past these also!!!!!!!!!!! And, the hood lets water in along the hood seal, so it is breathing air also right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That would be correct if the ball is seated. However when your on and off the throttle and the ball falls off the taper, I doubt the suction would be enough to pull it back into the seat??
A flapper valve would easily be pulled back into the closed position as its length of travel is very short.
Interesting either way?

This also reminds me of issues we had in Mod runabout SeaDoo 800 /951 years ago The intake air was so strong it would pull the carbon seal off the driveshaft seat and pull exhaust in.
Going to the old style shaft seal was the cure for that problem.

Flipping thru hot products catalog and I find the versa plag section. "This is not intended to be used as a stand alone system".......... go figure.

Small versiplug bolted to aluminum plate cut with hole saw, 5200 to the rickter scupper ring. Versiplug max inside tube Incase plate comes off. Fool proof. Smoke proof, can let ski sit docked over night if I felt like it. Drains fast. Solved smoke issue and running like wild chicken to dock in case rickter sinks. Flaps are a waste of time

Good read, forgot about his thread. my 1 year old rickter scupper flap is already showing signs of dry rotting and cracking. I'm going to have to do something about it next season but I'd hate to spend a few hundred cdn on a thrust/other scupper just to have my engine choke on smoke. May be better off with an auto bilge for 1/2 the price and just run a sketchy flap. Doesnt sounds like theres a decisive fix to this issue. The rickter scupper doesnt appear to leak horrible when new and I've never had a water or smoke issues running just the flap. Either way I've gotta buy a new flap or spend $300 cdn on 2 scuppers and make a custom plate before next season.

Seams like the thrust scupper being closer to the scupper tube opening may make the smoke issue even worse? Compared to one further down the pipe? Can anyone attest to this? Anyone running JUST a thrust scupper without smoke issues?

@Lumberjack here is your decisive fix. No smoke, no leak.

See @JetManiac for the versa R

I believe 2 3/4 hole-saw cuts the right size hole. 1/8” plate 5200 to the ring, it ain’t coming off. If I knew beforehand it would be this legit I wouldn’t have put the versi max in the tube. Glad it’s there nevertheless.

Or just do what everyone else does and bilge every 5 seconds, sounds fun.

Right on, anyway of knowing if just the mini scupper would not let smoke in? Trying to avoid spending $250 cdn on a chunk of plastic w a ball in it if I can get away with just the small version you're running without the inline large ball scupper.

I'm not running a bilge just factory scupper. I only ride lakes and river, no surf in my neck of the woods so im not horribly worried about the lack of bilge.

Jamo07sj's setup is good. I believe the way his system works is based on the the fact that hole is small and the ball does not weigh much. The Ball in the Max is heavy!!!!!

At this point, I may install the Max again and silicone in into the tube also, and just keep running the flap. I do not see how the ball is going to do much good with you dont have water "pressing up against the ball" since the flap will be be preventing the water from closing the ball...........

Going for a ride this afternoon. Will find out once and for all if my leak was just from the ball valve.

Yep you got it. It happened to work, before I installed I wasn’t sure if it was going to allow smoke in for those super long no wake zones. I found cap I planned on using for no wake zone then removing once out. It was never necessary though.
