IFWA Freeride World Championship at Pismo Oct 19th-21st

I helped pull Mike out of the surf and took his folks to the hospital with him. He's hurt for sure, but his dangerously handsome face certianly is not "smashed in"...he took a little chunk out of his lower lip and had 6 stitches put in in place of it, and he does indeed had a compound fracture of the tib/fib.

I was present when the ortho doc advised his options and he was taken to surgery last night so they could flush the wound, set the bone temporaily and splint him for a couple of days. He was VERY fortunate that his wetsuit contained the rupture and no sand or particulate matter got in. He told me he pulled a Pancake and landed that huge backey flat. He knew immediately his leg was broken and looked down to see the distortion seconds before the rescue boat arrived with the backboard.

With a 15' wave bearing down on them, he grabbed for the backboard and since the rescue driver had no choice, they had to gas it to get away from that wave or risk getting rolled. The jet wash appears to have actually pulled the fracture back into place so it wasn't really obvious it was an open fracture when he arrived on the beach.

The plan now is to pump him full of antibiotics until approximately Wednesday and then return him to surgery here in Arroyo Grande's hospital so a rod can be placed. He'll be on crutches for at least 3 months, but the Doc says since he's young and in such stellar shape, odds are he will recover nicely. He should be able to go home by next Monday or so.

Mike is super bummed to be injured, but was amazingly strong, calm and level headed throughout this whole ordeal. His parents are with him and I'm doing all I can to make sure they are as comfortable as possible too. Mike is a good friend, an amazing competitor and an exceptionally strong person. I know he can get through this with flying colors. Big BIG hugs to you my friend when you read this Mikey.

The winners of the final IFWA World Tour SKi Class stop are:

Taylor Curtis - 1st
Pierre Maxient - 2nd
Mark Sickerling - 3rd

Give me a day or so to post the total final placements and a press release gang. We're all beat from busting hump in Pismo, so I really appreciate the slack you'll cut us until we recover a little.

Yep - it was a real tear-jerker for sure. The folks from Northwest Freeride shooting for th "4JK" documentary had a lot of great input in the interviews of various folks on Joe...and spent a lot of time with the Kleenex box too. It was worth it though.

Thanks to DokWok for shipping the front page of the LetJKKnow.com site which had been blown up into a poster for all IFWA competitors in Portugal to sign for Joe...talk about an emotional piece of artwork. I didn't know what it was when it arrived for me at my folks house on Saturday - opened it and pretty much lost it. So many comments in barely decipherable english - but the points got across and there was a LOT of luv for JK there. Joe was very touched when we presented it to him during the awards ceremony Sunday.

Overall a really great weekend despite injuries - cannot thank you all enough for your participation and support.

just wanted to give some credit to some guys that may not have placed well but i thought rode well..

tom (tomski) - charged really hard in tough conditions(especially for a desert rat) and did one of the biggest reentries ive ever seen (one handed)

nick delgorgio- absoloutly ripped it!...the guy dosnt even ride and he is by far one of the best surf riders on the planet..did his first backflip in over three years in the comp and stuck it..

jerry brandon-when i woke up sunday a.m. and saw double overhead waves with stiff offshore winds i knew jfb was gonna kill it...he did..huge reentries and late slashes on HEAVY waves..he won his heat against serlin but couldnt ride cause he broke his heal on a one handed backy he flatlanded (sellout )

tc for mixing it up and throwing his first backflip variations..

ross killed it as well..HUGE airs and crazy tricks

mike serlin went huge: heal up man

cuong put in some sold runs in waves that were very hard to ride..

I'm headed back to the hospital in a few to see Mikey, then home to Sac for a reality check (back to work/my normal job for the winter). I'll let you guys know if anything changes with Mikey.

In the meantime, I wanted to thank each and every competitor, as well as the entire staff of On Course Events for putting on what I considered the greatest show on earth this weekend. The surf was spectacular and so were every single one of you. This event, and the Daytona event, in my conservative estimation, have done more to grow our sport in one single year than anything else worldwide. I'm humbled to have been able to witness the miracle you all pulled off in Pismo, and look foreward to seeing you all in Daytona in a few short months.

It'll take me a while to get the pics uploaded, but I swear I almost wet myself when reviewing the HUGE wrestling match between The Masked Maurder (an unnamed mystery retired freerider) and two wild chicks (one dressed as Elmo, the other in a giant banana costume) Saturday night. Hot wrestling action around, on and completely through the events pit site was covered with blow by blow color comentary by non-other than the Vanilla Gorilla (Chad Cole)over the wireless mic system and PA....lol! The match was a draw when a fire extinguisher was discharged at the crown by the Maurder...I think he knew it was curtians for him if he didn't do something QUICK. Good times!

Gnarliest contest surf I've ever seen. Sunday the surf was absolutely unreal.

I have to put a HUUUUUGE thanks out to Christian (Prem1x) for saving my ass by letting me use/break his blaster. I stripped a drive shaft about two seconds into my first heat, and he stepped up and hooked me up.

Ross, Mike, Eddie, JFB, Taylor, Pierre, Pete.......hell everyone who competed really stepped it up. Great show, lots of BIG tricks all weekends.

Mike and JFB, definitely heal up guys.

oh yea one more thing...i was out riding during one of ross's heats...i was riding right next to the contest area so i could see them riding pretty well...i remember going over this huge set (maybe a 13 or 14ft face) and thinking how gnarly it was...well i looked over and ross is lanching off the same wavei just rode over..he was about 25 feet out the back upside down with his hands off the bars!!..it was prety insane..you really had to have been out in the water to realize how big and dangerous it was
