I think that Daytona rust damage finally wore it down enough... You were getting some big air today. It could of revved up and POW. :banghead:

I haven't even opened it up. I'm just puttin the other motor in and then I'll rip it apart this winter.

All I know for sure is that the rear plug had a chunk of something in it and that same plug had a zero gap:frown:

I imagine its gonna be pretty narly in there. After it blew I started it and it ran on 1 cylinder for about 20 seconds plus I tried to start it a few more time after that:Banane01:

I would say the cause is it is 8 years old and sat in saltwater for 2 weeks:bigeyes:

However I will rip it apart today to post the specifics in the carnage section.

Freaks!

Ok. The carnage pics!

I gotta say Yamahas are tough as nails. This motor has been to hell and back and over all the damage isn't bad at all. The sleeves look fine. The head looks fine.

I'll have her back as a spare motor in no time.:arms:

Is it normal for head gaskets to just fall apart upon removal of the head??? What a piece of crap!

micmac said it should be brownish black and that is what it is.

Either way it is a 99 motor that has never been touched except for a milled head and lightened flywheel.

In its next life it will be a LPW ported screamer.

but is that piston all pitted on top or is that just the picture?

there is a great thread with burn patterns on it somewhere in here check it out
color is not terribly reliable on plugs to read anymore they say

just trying to make sure some odd error or change don't blow up your new one
