I as well have a bunch of solid aluminum bars to sell. I drill out the last 6 inches on either side of the bar. Works to keep the weight down a bit and it acts as a vacuum to keep the grips on.

first 2 are duners have yyou seen the jumps they make. the 3rd one is a drag bike

yea but usually its just fat guys in jeans and a tank top doing donuts in the campsite haha..i just dont see why you would use handlebars designed for something that weights 40lbs and put it on something that weights 300+ for a weight saving of a pound or two

I got rid of my straight bars (Bruins bars) and went back to an older UMI/Blowsion 4 degree bar with the crossbar. Just seems way stronger and more comfortable. Drilled new holes in my Bruins steering plate to make em fit. Happy with the results.

Not sure why everyone went to the straight pipe bars...(to move more forward?) Seems like the older style bars were actually better. Never heard of anyone breaking the old UMI's. Maybe this was a case of change for the sake of change and it didn't work out too well if everyone is breaking them.

I feel like I have less leverage on 4 degree vs straight. Back in 2006 I took my SXR with 0 degree UMI and Yamacat's Limited SXR with my old 4 degree bars to the Lake Norman race. I had the hardest time on hers, actually made me get arm pump from the 4 degree bars

I am also the exact opposite. I can only ride about 10 minutes with straight bars....I need a slight slight bend, hence the 4 degree. My main point was that the crossbar seems to make them stronger. Even the zero degree. The straight pipe just seems to have a lot of distance from the clamp to the grips making it easy to break off.

LOL, just saw this thread today! DJ, I've broke a couple of the old style bars w /cross bars.

If you look at the pic in post #33, you'll see a set of UMI "straight bend" with the old skool V bend in the middle. It also had the crossbar. You can see in the pic where the cross bar clamp sat. I wouldnt say those are any stronger than a set of straight alum bars, but im no metallurgist. As yyou can see they still broke right next to the clamp. This is where all mine break.

My Chromoly bars havent broke yet. Heavy, but indestructible! :skull2::skull2::skull2:

You might try sanding a slight radius on the edge of your clamping surfaces, you might have a hard edge that's digging into the bar when you tighten the clamps that's causing localized fatigue, as somebody mentioned.

You said it Wolf!
That is a great idea if your running alum bars of any kind. The tension that is there next to the clamp gets pulled on a lot and the hard edge slowly makes in break there.

Good tips here. It sucks real hard when your bars break.

i dont know if there is an aluminum shop near you, but you can buy solid 7/8" bar stock dirt cheap and make solid bullet proof bars. they wont be black, just raw aluminum color. i snapped a set of x-metal bars a few months ago and they warranteed them when i sent them back.
