Kawi power?

I agee with Rtrask14...
I was in the same boat...lol... i had a nice built 750sx so chose a EME hull check out my build progress in my skis section
I could build a kawi based ski for a lot less money!!! and still have fun in the sport of freestyle!

i almost finish a hurricane whit a sxr motor i used the yami mid shaft and pump ,it a real budget project i will post some picture soon ,i made some aluminium plate between the hull and the motor plate so far a very easy fit .

Rad Dudes does make the plate to drop a kawi 2 cyl or 3 cyl into a yami motor mount setup. Very easy drop in plate. Then you just run a touch longer midshaft and couplers from ada.

I see that this is kind of a old post, but ill still put in my 2 cents since I lost all kinds of sleep trying to decide what motor to run in my Gen2 Bob and finally realized just go with what your gut tells you and stick with it. I ordered my hull to work with kawi engine and pump because Ive spent the last 8 years on a sxr and thats what Im use to. I had a 701 and a 760 on the shelf right next to this sxr motor im currently using and still didnt choose a yamaha. Ive owned superjets and tried to make myself like them before building the Bob, but I couldnt do it. Right now the Bob is far from where I want it to be, but for being a stock engine and pump with a B pipe only it hits hard and is super reliable. The pump leaves something to be desired, but the donor ski it came from was beached a lot and has had sand sucked through it so Im sure its wore out so Im not blaming the kawi pump for that. Looking to buy a aftermarket pump with trim soon as my budget permits and I feel it should flip off of its owns wake confidently after that is completed.

We use the kawiengines for some years. Last build was with SXR engine and wetpipe. But we use yamaha pump/midshaft/mounts with our carbonbadplate.

I can understand your interest in the 66E platform with the large intake opening and the positives associated with the crank. Funny how everyone thought WDK was out in left field lol. The Kawi cases look great, was there any power increase with them?

They are both good motors, they are just good for different things.

I have had a x2 for many years. I have ridden many different skis. One thing that is consistantly true is the 750 motors get on pipe later than the Superjet motors.

I have ridden kawis that hit hard on the bottom but I can't get that performance, and I couldn't figure out why.

It turns out the 750x2 guys making power on the bottom have 9/17 props. Ryan's x2, for example, is running a very similar setup, but he's using a 12/18 prop turning about 7500rpm. My 750sp with a fpp and a 10/18 prop wasted the crank bearings. I didn't have a tach then, but I bolted everything onto a 750bp motor with a tach and was hitting over 7800rpm at 51mph on my x2.

My Superjet on the other hand gets on pipe right away, I forget the prop pitch, it doesn't matter. What does matter is that it hits harder on the bottom than my x2, but it peaks at 7250rpm, a very safe and long lasting number.

On the other hand, when my x2 hits pipe about 3500 rpm, it absolutely obliterates my Superjet, bigger carbs, but basically the same parts. Important to note that my 14/19 big hub x2 is over propped, so when I repitch to 13/18, I will hit much sooner, but I will go from 7200 peak rpm to 7400-7600 peak rpm, a much less safe number for my crank. The 750 also has more stroke, so higher piston speed and less piston life, add that too a much higher rpm than my yamaha.

If you want a freeride specific boat, and the 10 second test doesn't matter to you, then a kawi can make great power. You can always prop the ski to make the power where you want it. It just makes a very poor recreational setup to only be able to brap and never carve or race.

My Superjet driveline is a much better platform, because when tuned to be a safe wot boat, it hits harder than the same mods on a kawi. If the 10 second test doesn't matter, to compare apples to apples, I'm sure the Superjet will hit harder then too.

So, the short of it is, that if you want power on the bottom, then a stock kawi motor is not the way to go. Yeah, you could do like me and stick with the platform you have, but then just like me, you will have a very nice setup with much invested that you are very displeased with, because side by side with my Superjet, I am very disappointed with the power of my x2. I'd swap, but my x2 already has so much invested its not worth starting over.

For the record, I only say Superjet because I didn't want to keep typing 61x/62t over and over. Also, I'm sure a kawi based am motor is just as good as a Superjet motor. I've never ridden one, but if you have $5000 to spend on an am Pv motor, then they are all probably pretty comparable.

I run a SXR800 engine in my hull and I have always been able to do the same tricks as friends with 701s in other hulls. It's all about tuning imo, but the SJ does hit sooner naturally.
