I have rode bikes/quads my whole life and if you plan tooling around then I would not even consider a 2 stroke. (It doesn't seem like you or Katie) It is like riding Lous ski. All you want to do it hammer it so you feel the power. Then you start riding like an idiot and then wrap yourself around a tree. If you have a 4 stroke then you can use the power when needed and you can just do some slow exploring style trail riding without having to clean it out very often.

I would look at a WR250 you can both have the same bike and they will do anything you want.

I am going to look at a KTM 525 tomorrow but it is a supermoto for the street.

So did you buy the 525?

BK I have to differ with you there. A WR and a YZ of the same year may be close but not really, Yamaha dropped the two stroke WR a long time ago. That is like saying a KDX is the same as a KX or a Suzuki RMX the same as an RM. An enduro bike and an MX bike are worlds apart. Enduros are a lot heavier, under suspended, and have less power. Most off road racers would still race an MX bike in the woods over an enduro bike. That is why Suzuki, Kawasaki, and Suzuki all dropped their ywo stroke enduro bikes.

YZF250 and WrF250 are 2 completely different animals. The WRF's are detuned from the start and make hp in the 20's while YZF's make 30 - 35 hp stock. The YZF revs quicker and is geared for mx while the WR has Wide Ratio trans and lighting coil ignition for lights and slower revs. Wr's are notoriously heavy and muffled for low decibels. Race bike (YZF) vs trail bike (WR).
A close analogy would be a Honda CR 2 stroke vs an XR 4 stroke. But the YZF is capable of tooling around at low speeds.

im going to differ with you there . there isnt that much off a diffrence and if it wasnt for the elec start you wouldnt be able to tell that my bike wasnt a yzf. and if you
do all the free mods that wakes the wr,s right up and arnt far off the power off a yzf.
and with the other mods i have done my, wr eats a yzf,s

Yes, your correct, but you can change the timing by removing the timing wheel, and relocating, believe there are marks on the gears for this which will change the timing to that of the YZ. Yes, there are other differences in electronics.

Would I say take a WR to a track, no. But for woods riding, the WR is an excellent bike and in its element.
It would be the top of my list for my kind of riding.........

Dont get me wrong, the KTM's are great also.

YZF and WR are toatlly different bikes... I'm looking at the 2009 Yamaha Power Sales guide and it says YZF weighs 40lbs less than a WR... That is a HUGE difference between the two bikes

THe YZF weighs the same as my bike 226lbs...

a yz250F would make an excellent woods/trails bike. the power characteristics of a 4 stroke engine lends itself better to slower, stop-and-go type of riding.

i think the WR is legally street legal though and thats the major difference that makes it more attractive to the trail guys because you can legally ride on fire roads and roads from one trail to another.

i know the WR guys put YZF cams on their bikes to make the engine snappier.

Anyone that thinks a YZF and a WRF are "essentially the same bike" needs to have a nice big hot steaming cup of STFU.

You obviously dont know jack about bikes and arent smart enough to actually read all the specs.

Just be quiet while the adults talk.

The two are built for different purposes, but start out almost the same.
