My personal opinion is that you should look for a bike with as few mods as possible.
I purchased a 2005 250EXC as my first bike and I love the thing... I would not by a dirt bike older than about 2005... They change so much (unlike jet skis) that you will be end up getting the 550 of the day... My 250 has tons of power, hydraulic clutch (you will wish you had one in tight trails), Excel rims, Brembo brakes, and Renthal bars all stock from the factory... THe best part is they are all street legal meaning you can ride to your local spot w/o trailering... That really comes in handy!!! The suspension is plush too... KTM rear suspention is not the best for jumping, but is perfect for trail riding. All in all, you will not find a better trail bike than the:
200EXC
250EXC
300EXC
It just depends on what kind of power you want. Also the EXC model has a wider band transmission so you can ride it on the street pretty easily..
KTM all the way!!!
My old 1995 XR 250 would go anywhere your 2005 pumpkin will go.......
Yes, techno has changed, suspensions are better. Oil systems are better. But it never limited my riding........
Any thoughts on this close ratio six speed tranny?
Thanks!

you dont know that until you spend time on something better!
When I went from the DRZ to the 450 exc it made so much of a difference I couldnt believe it myself..the right bike is confidence inspiring, more responsive and should also be more forgiving in case of an error
Are all KTM bikes titles as a motor cycle even if they don't have lights and such?
Not really interested in a bike that has someone's mods already done to it unless I know the person.

I have ridden better bikes through the exact same trails... Yes they were nice. But I could still get on my XR and hit the same trails.. Some places I could go faster than the others, some slower.......
I understand what you are saying though... I seriously think the KTM is the best bike for the woods... Go to any hare scramble, it's a sea of Orange. There is a reason for that......

too bad this tread isn't about how good you can ride a crappy bike through trails.... he he he

another thing... I am a very below average rider and can get on a my bike I can keep up w/ some good riders, you put me on a DRZ... I can't even finish the trail.. So I guess I'm saying I like how the KTM makes me a better rider, because I suck...
Dont get me wrong, I love KTM's, I really like things that are different, not what everybody else has.
GasGas makes some really good woods/trail bikes.
yes, all KTM's are titled as motorcycles, no restrictions... The ones w/o lights you will have to add. It's simple and KTM Hutt sells all the stuff... Your best bet would be a bike w/ lights already.
As far as the bikes you posted, they are a tad on the old side. I purchased a 2005 250EXC w/ lights for $3500 people and places should be wanting to deal since they have been in a credit lock...
btw- my bike was 100% stock except a aftermarket front fender... All I had to do to make it 100% street leagal was add a rear brake light switch (45$) and high low switch for my lights (10$) and some cheapo mirrors (15$ at a local bike shop). I ride it around town w/ full nobbys and all... it get's some strange looks...
KTM's slogan is "Ready To Race" and they are serious, because everything is already aftermarket, kinda like buying an Octane w/ the B pipe and lowerd hood, shorter pole ect...
Good info Katie and I are thinking KTM at this point so we can blast through town to our riding spot.

if it were me, I would put her on a 200EXC, and you on a 250, 300EXC... The 200 weighs under 200lbs and the 250 weighs 226lbs... that's very light.
the best part is you can get on the 200 and rip... It is the "mountain bike" of KTM dirtbikes and is suppose to be a total blast on single track trails... I have seen big guys ripping them through trail, but the downfall is torque or the lack of it... It would be a great all around bike for the wifey though. You will be surprised at how quick they are too...
:Banane01:
you wont regret that decision.....pretty much anything else you buy will be great on the road, crappy in the dirt...KTM is again, the exception
thats what I was thinking as well!
the only other option woudl be if you wanted a 4 stroke, then go 450....Nick's and my bike are pretty dead even if you rap them out from a stop sign :burnout:
I love my 4 stroker for around town and the occaisional 50 mile trip.......but everytime I get on Nicks or butti's 2 stroke and pull up to a stop sign it just feels so evil and outlawish its addictive!!!!
