Man, those reminences of a pier sticking out of the water would be incredibly dangerous in high surf. Even knowing the area the currents and waves can have you in places you dont want to be in seconds.
They searched a 50 mile radious by air, I cannot imagine how he was not found, we need to wear orange vests and helmets when riding that stuff. Sounds crazy but this makes it reallity.
I cannot get this out of my mind, the pics of his family are etched in my brain.

I hope they find him walking the shore line............

I have always been a big fan of wearing bright colors while on the water. Red helmet and red coasts guard approved life jacket for me.

god ,

i don't know Kevin aside from a brief meeting at a ride and trying to buy gear in the past. He seemed like a stand up guy for sure though.

i feel like i got punched in the stomach hearing this none the less.

this blows.

know matter what happens in the end, i hope we can all learn a lesson in this.

having my own young guys at home i can't even begin to know what the family is going through.

my thoughts to them and wishes for a speedy rescue!!!

This is why we never are supposed to ride alone...which i have done but this makes me rethink that idea big time! In big surf always have a buddy or 2 because if both of you break down you are in big trouble. I would suggest the buddy system where you keep an eye on 1 guy in your group and he does the same and you both makes sure you make it out of the water before leaving. I've broke down before and waited on the jettys just to see a buddy ride on by because i guess i blended in. But 20 mins later he came back out and found me. I have also gone back out after a buddy didn't come back just to find him chillin on the beach waiting on someone else that already went in. So a system is key in rough surf.

JJC568,

Thanks for sharing information.

I know it is easy to be critical of others in bad situations so I hope that nobody places blame where it shouldn't be.

I hope he is found soon.

Not only do I only ride in a group but I also try to buddy up with one other guy while in the group. In big waves it gets real hard to keep track of multiple people, especially in an inlet environment. Maybe it's not as big of a deal in a beach break. A tap on the top of your helmet lets the others know you're ready to head in.

Yep...that is exactly what we do. Tap on the helmet so you know they are going in.

always
always ride with a partner, surf or not.

I have myself been put at risk on a bone flat day when my stator died.
stranding me on the break wall.
i was alone, and stranded. had to run about a 1/2 mile then try to swim the channel, nearly got clipped by a cigarette boat.

Or get towed in....

I will admit pushing the buddy rule. There are times I think "...it is small enough, it will be OK" or "I'll just head out for short ride, and take it easy". There are plenty of times when riding as a group we go off in different directions looking for the best break. A rider could easily go down and no one would know until everyone returns to our launch spot.

We can all learn from this.

Absolutely!
The guy in the video said his Buddy had gone in for like 15 minutes, and He stay out waiting because He knew someone else was coming.....15 minutes! I can tell you from first hand experience that I have been in that same situation and so have my buddies. You go out on your own leaving your buddy at the Dock because He is taking longer to suit up or tapping the gas....whatever.
So you go out confidently enough knowing that He will meet you out there. This shows that ANY situation can turn ugly very fast for anyone, no matter what's your experience.

us cleveland guys have been there and done that too
the thought that we will just meet up at the beach etc .

that's gotta stop
the ride over alone could be that last chance on luck that should never have happened.
