So a ride report... Spent a couple of hours on the water today. Motor felt much better with the new carbs and intake. Jetted to 115/132.5 and 24psi pop off. Might feel a little rich. Chuck recommended 130 mains for this motor. I'll put those in and test again tomorrow. FCV might need to be closed a little more. Waterbox is cool to the touch and you can feel it loading up.
I don't have a lot to compare this hull or motor to. For the motor, the strongest ski I've been on is my 1100 blaster. This motor definitely feels stronger. I've only run stock pipes. At first I was a little underwhelmed with the PFP, but after trying a wide open run my mind was changed pretty quick. Once the RPMs hit 5k-6k it just took off. I got off the throttle because I'm a püssy. I think I'm a little over propped right now. Going to try pitching down a little to see if I can get into the power band faster.
The hull rides great. It doesn't ride as nose high as I was expecting, and it planes out very easily. I think widening the rear more than the front helped offset the amount I shortened it, adding some bouyancy. I still want try some tubbies to see what that does to it. The other thing I was concerned about was how the deeper chines would affect how tight the back felt. A problem I had with my square was getting it to slide when I wanted it to. I could break the rear loose, but it required a lot of effort and wouldn't want to come back. This hull actually slides very predictably. Pole down and look in the direction I wanted to go, little blip of the throttle and the backend would come out. Lean a little over and the rail would hook in the rear, stopping the slide. Very happy with that aspect of this hull.
When it comes to riding, I'm a bit rusty at best (terrible if we are being honest). Which should come as no surprise considering the last year was spent almost entirely building this hull and all of these pretty carbon pieces. If my skills on the water were even half of how my work looks, I would probably be showing you some pictures of rolls and flips that I am sure this ski is capable of. Sadly my best attempt at "freestyle" (and I use that term loosely here) was a 180 flat spin that I rode out of.
The bad, I cut a notch in one of my footholds and it compromised the structural integrity. Also, the cam locks, while conceptually very cool in my opinion, kind of suck when it comes to adjusting with everything all turfed up. Replaced those with regular nuts. Since I already made molds for footholds without the extra width, I'm going to make a couple of those tonight and try them out. I do like the feel of the form fit, but had a hard time staying in. I think some angled blocks would help. Also I couldn't kick one of them very hard due to the above mentioned structural issues, and the other foot has a broken toe nail (see the I'm a püssy comment). I'm sure that played into it some.
More bad... I didn't loctite one of the trim bolts and it worked its way out. All of a sudden I lost my right hand turning. And around that same time a pole bolt came loose. I called it for the day. One thing I absolutely hate about this hull, I have to take the pipe out to tighten the pole bolts. Almost not worth the trade off of not seeing a pole bolt to have to wrench under the nose to adjust it. I'm working on a solution for the revised hull that will allow tightening from inside the pole.
Overall I'm super happy with this hull. Especially for a first attempt. It rides stable, slides well, carves decently enough, has a ton of tray space, good pop from the rocker and it jumps out of the water easily. Also it's pretty damn sexy sitting in the water.
