Metal through an 865

If it were my engine I'd be tearing it right down to find the source of that peice of debris - could be a read cage part, crank shell, epoxy, carb butterfly screw etc etc - either way it shouldn't be there and could be a sign of worse to come.

Just my opinion..

Just a gentle reminder, your motor and your life, that debris came from somewhere 1,2 or 3 screens, guessing it was downstream of the screens...

After spending hours going over the motor I am making the gamble that it was a fluke thing that came in through the intake or possibly a piece of the screen itself. Reeds/screws were fine, epoxy was fine, carb butterflys fine, crank smooth and bearings looked fine. We ran a magnet through the fogging oil in the bottom of the cases...no signs of metal. No aluminum on the plugs. I agree I am taking on risk, and in a perfect world I would have completely rebuilt it. But going to try and get some more life out of it. Going to monitor it very closely for the next few rides...Sucks but not much I can do right now.

man i have been in your shoes... it sucked and i cleaned every thing up and crossed my fingers. i came to the conclusion it was from the port work and my lack of cleaning. the crank looked spotless is what led me to believe it was in a transfer port of something. that was over 150 gallons ago, hope your story ends well too bro

i think if a locating pin came out it would be evident on the cylinder wall, they are not in line with any ports so it would have to make its way past the piston crown. good thought tho, it has not been mentioned yet.

This has been causing me horrible mental anguish over the past few days......LOL. I decided this evening to go on the side of caution and pull the entire motor apart and give it the yearend overhaul now. New OEM crank, seals, topend, and bore to 865. I just cant stomach the chance of the $3100 cylinder being damaged. Better then have it become a $6000 paperweight. Out it will come again.

Good shout, makes sense..

If it was metal it would have hit random areas also not just the outer squishband, still detonation in my books, did you send a pick to Xscream for thier opinion? I think you should put the head back on (no o-rings) and check the squish before you open it up.

There is random hits over the center of the piston/dome if you have it upclose and infront of you, not just squishband.

if you guys sauy its a piece of debris, why is the pitting just on the outside of the piston, not to mention that its on the rear piston too, which usually is should be set richer.... i'm inclined into deto theory...my .02
