Other Movie review thread

Just got back from watching The Hobbit part 2 in HFR 3D. Not sure if I liked it or not. The HFR is for high frame rate and it made the movie look like a video game sequence. The live scenes with little to no CGI were more lifelike than anything ever filmed but then other scenes looked like I was watching an animated film. It was very odd and very distracting. The story itself was pretty decent but I'll hold further review till I can watch it on a normal screen at home.

When I go to Costco, Best Buy, etc, I'll see some BluRay movies playing on these 1080 flat screens and the movies look horrible IMHO. I know this sounds weird, but the clarity, brightness and what seems to be a lack of depth of field make them look like your watching something shot with a really high end home video camera (if that makes any sense at all). It's kind of like the difference you'd see between a soap opera shot with video and a television shot shot with film and transferred to video.

Yes, it's very hard to articulate what I'm trying to describe.

Anybody else notice this.

BTW, it doesn't look like this when I view a BR movie at home using my projector.

I'm taking the kids to the 2D normal version tomorrow.

I watched Thor 2 a couple of weeks ago. That was pretty good (but certainly not great).

As far as TV goes, with Breaking Bad over, Walking Dead and Revolution on Winter break, and Falling Skies turning into utter :):):):) - I am out of things to watch.
I keep hearing Downton Abbey is good.

Last few episodes of Falling Skies were getting pretty bad...... Revolution is good, but hard to see where it is gonna go....

I put Noah on our list as well and my wife just rolled here eyes. I thought the preview looked great. The ironic thing is that my wife was raised Catholic, goes to church every weekend, (that I don't drag her out riding anyways) and I am the Aethiest in the house.

Have we covered off The Lone Ranger yet? Watching it now and getting a couple laughs. It's not horrible but it's not great either.

Watched Bad Grandpa last night and I agree with madmat...it was less than sophomoric humor. On a very low level it was funny but even I, who love crude humor, got tired of it quickly.
I watched Wolf of Wall Street too. Typical martin Scorsese. Real strong acting and story, but I grew tired of language. I usually LOVE his movies. Maybe I'm getting old, but I could do without some of the dialogue.
Gonna see the Secrete Life of Walter Mitty next. Hoping for something fresh.

Watched captain phillips last night, we dont go to movies because its a racket In my mind but damn this was a good movie and a true story too. Also watched prisoner the other night and it got to me. Once you have a kid watching that put me Into protection mode worse than usual.

Walter Mitty was pretty good, definite feel good movie. Critics hated it. But I thought it was decent.

47 Ronin on the other hand was the worst movie I have seen in years. It as terrible.

Actually rented Captain Philips to watch tonight!

Just saw Captain Phillips. That was good Tom hanks' acting always feels legit, bad grandpa was horrible. Also saw American Hustle. I know it won awards but i was disappointed. It felt slow...

My wife was out for a bit last night and I was working on harnesses so I put in Bad Grandpa for a couple laughs. You could render the entire movie down to a 5 minute highlight reel of 5 maybe 6 good laughs but that was about it.

I'll go ahead and revise my earlier impression of The Lone Ranger, after watching the entire thing I can say it was a total letdown.

Why would anyone willingly watch 47 Ronin? That had "poop of the year" written all over it. Horrible.
Lone Ranger was boring. Wanted to like it and I did like Depp's performance. The movie sucked.
I really wanted to like Captain Phillips. Solid acting by Hanks, but f'n boring and way too long.
I have a giftcard for the local theatre, have had it since Christmas. I just haven't seen a single thing that looks decent enough to spend the time.

Some older stuff: I recently re-watched the entire Nolan Batman trilogy. Fantastic, a series I can watch over and over again.
Watched Pacific Rim for the first time since seeing it in the theatre. Awesome flick.
Also rewatched District 9. Great style, awesome movie, love the way it's done. I love Sharlto Copley. He also did an awesome job in Europa Report (watch it if you like hard scifi) and Elysium.
I watched Generation Kill for the first time and really liked it. I initially thought that it over-emphasized military stupidity, but after doing some research it seems legit. After that, I started watching Over There and haven't been impressed so far.

Finally, the wife and I started watching Six Feet Under. It's over ten years old now, but we had never seen it. Both of us feel that it's among the top three shows we've ever seen. Fantastic throughout. I think it's funny how similarly Michael C. Hall's David character is to Dexter.

D-Roc

I forgot!
I watched the crow for the first time in like 15 years probably. Man there are some killer one liners.
"Victims, aren't we all"
"It's not a good day to be a bad guy"
"Is that gasoline I smell?"
That movie holds up IMO. Nothing lately I have seen is good enough to recommend seeing. :( so I been digging up my old favs.
