Super Jet My Attempt At A SN Rocker/Shorten

Here is my attempt at a SN rocker/shorten. I have no previous experience with fiberglass, other than installing footholds on my RN, so it will be interesting. I need something to do while my wife studies for her CPA exams, so I figured I might as well be productive. I picked up a relatively clean 1990 SN hull, with footholds and tubbies. Here are some pictures of when I got the ski. I plan on cutting the back 3" and the front by about 8" or so. My overall length goal is 6 1/2'. I am also going to lower the hood since that was already started and the hood liner has been removed. Stay tuned for more updates.

Call me crazy, but I really like the size of the tray of my RN, and I liked my old SN setup as well... I like how these holds fit as is. (I believe they are Trinity's) And making a new tray is more than I would like to do at this point. For some reason the right foothold was trimmed down and cut weird so I will have to fix that.

Its probably trimmed to fit the exhaust pipe. On the 1990's hull the pipe sits high in the engine compartment and then angles down to the base to exit the exhaust. This was done to prevent water intrusion back up the pipe when sitting. You will most likely have to cut the whole tray out to fix that. It makes for an annoying ride if you leave it be. I had to do this with one of my holds before I chopped the hell out of my square.

I like that you already have tubbies on yours. That is on my list of to do's while I do a similar build. I took 5 inches off the back.

When in doubt, Throttle-out.

Exactly. I completely removed the rear exhaust because of this foothold issue. The side exhaust was easy because I used a Polaris 780 Exhaust outlet piece and just formed some carbon over 2-part foam...

If you are going to chop it up, don't just dive halfway in. If you want to do anything later you'll end up re-doing everything you are doing right now. Might as well go Straight WOT!!

I started out by cutting 3" off the back and curving the gunwalls. (spelling?) I figured if I was cutting it up so much I might as well make it have some more curves. I then cut the front section off right before the pole mount area, because I want to keep that section instead of glassing a new one in. When I cut the the back section water started dripping out, so I ended up defoaming the whole thing. I used a scraper and screw driver on the whole thing and reached underneath the tray because I did not want to cut the tray out. I think after drinking one beer or so I decided to hack the rear bondline off and figured I would do something differently with that.

After hacking the ski apart kind of haphazardly, it was time for the glass work. Cutting the ski apart was kind of crazy because I wasn't really sure which direction I wanted to go with it, and I have zero creative ability. I would look, look a little bit longer, drink a beer, look some more, sometimes have another beer, and then finally cut a little it. I don't really know what I am doing so I started in the back because I figured it would be the least noticeable section if I screw it up / don't like how it comes out.

I made a kind of template for glassing the back section flat by fitting in a cut piece of cardboard and covered it with duct-tape to keep the glass from sticking. Once the outer layer was done and kind of pretty looking I added multiple (way more than I needed) layers on the inside.

I cut parallel lines in the bottom 1/2 of the nose so I could get the rocker that I wanted. I really wanted to cut it off completely, but I didn't trust myself to get the shape back properly.

I then proceeded to glass the top section of the hood, since that was already cut when I bought the hull. I tried to get the shape to flow well with the sides and the nose, but we'll see how it actually lines up when I am done. What I did to shape it was make cardboard "walls" on the outside and make a cardboard base on the inside of the hull. Once I had that good enough I poured expanding foam into my cardboard section so I could shape it later. I am not sure how I missed pictures of that part, but it was a mess. Turns out the expanding foam was kind of waste of time and a pain in the butt to remove afterwards. I am relatively pleased with how the shape came out.

What the crap!:aargh4: I will have to re-load them tonight when I get out of work. I did have some issues with my posting last night, but I though I checked it when it was done. Sorry for the severe disappointment!

Here is how the tray/footholds came out when I was done with them. The 1st picture shows the foam shaped and the 2nd picture obviously shows it glassed in.

Here is a nice sideways picture of how the inside of the shortened rear section came out.
