My first AM build. Rickter XFR - Full Carbon

Yea I have already ground off all the gelcoat inside the tunnel, still have to do the aft face but don't want to do that until I get it centered. I have been through both those XFR treads extensively and repeatedly. Haha I hadn't gone through those two Edge threads though. Interestingly both of the Edges are using the Jet Dynamics style pump shoe, which is more like an OEM style shoe and they actually fit the recessed portion of the intake track. Im seriously considering just getting one of those instead.

Maybe you got a bad shoe? I've never had any alignment issues with the 3 RRP shoes I've installed in different hulls. A jet dynamics wouldnt fit, that tunnel is too small, considering how that rrp is not fitting correctly.

Good looking ski.

Thats honestly what I was thinking. I can see where they machined the casting and it is that machined area that is causing the alignment problem.

Also, The tunnel is the same as what comes in the Edge and those two Edge build threads Big Kahuna just posted both use a Jet Dynamics style shoe.

I’d be more concerned with how the shoe centers on the pump, not the tunnel. I just finished installing a shoe this morning and I wound up installing a pump with shaft, aligning with a CF tool and then centering my shoe to that. It wound up in a far different position than being centered in tunnel.

@JKMike well if you decide to go that route, I have a brand new JD shoe I would sale, was going to use it on a 165mm tunnel, but was going to take too much grinding to make work, so i used a RRP instead.

But like mikesx said, I'd check alignment with pump and see where that gets you.

That is what I am concerned about. In my particular case it just happens to be the same thing. I have already test fit, shimed, and aligned the pump. The pump is centered pretty well in the tunnel. But the shoe isn't and I dont think I can remove enough material to make it fit correctly as it would leave to large a gap for gluing in.

Here are some better pictures showing what I'm talking about. To get this shot I first installed and aligned the pump then removed everything but the wear ring. Now in this picture the lip your seeing is on the top left which I am less concerned about but the same thing is happening in the bottom right side, I just cant get a pic of it.

This is how mine fit. Not a Rickter but same kinda deal. In my case the shoe was to big. It all has to align with bulkhead. Pump shimmed to bulkhead first.

Bubble wrap to hold shoe while I flipped the boat over.

This how shoe fit centered on pump.

I think your right, the shoes bore is off center...
either replace it or grind the left ear till it’s centered then grind the right ear to even up the gaps and let your glue of choice take up the gaps....

I wound up grinding shoe, building up tunnel . You'll be the opposite. But I wouldn't grind carbon . Build shoe up or don't worry about it. You would have to grind whole tunnel to make it fit the shoe properly. Scuff tunnel, shim shoe parallel to pump.

The hole is round in shoe. Grind shoe till centered with pump.

Yea it looks like you had a similar issue. I agree on not wanting to grind the carbon. From your first set of pictures, iIt looks like you had a pretty large gap to fill on the sides of the shoe. That is about how large I would need to make the gap on one side to get the bore of the shoe to line up with the pump. And I am a little concerned about that. What did you use for adhesive? And have you had any issues since?

Yeah bro this is an imprecise science! Make that SOB fit. You don't want to see what I had to do to make scoop grate fit. I use 3:1 US Comp epoxy, West 404 Density Filler and Graphite. I put left over batches of this on shop floor and run it over everyday with a loaded forklift, and its still shiny.

Err, I did not nor will I ever use a JD again. Granted, mine is a 148 shoe.
