New 2017 Kawasaki 4 stroke sx-r!

Although it doesn't appeal to myself, it is different and thinking outside the box and could be the start of a resurgence of the stand up scene to the general public, getting people more exposed and introduced to our world.

It makes sense to me though that they wouldn't try and compete in the freeride scene, there are already a tonne of options saturating the market so why would they throw another ski in there that doesn't have the same aftermarket support as the Yamis do.

The ski they created will likely dominate a race course and that's where they want it to be...easy for the public to ride and dominate the race course seems like a win win for them. Racers are always looking for the edge to win and a lot will likely buy one, plus it's motor is familiar to a lot of the aftermarket making upgrading easy.

I think it will do well and hopefully open the door to more Innovation to come in the fourstroke scene.

I like that Kawi committed itself to bringing the SXR back, but this new machine kind of misses the mark for what a standup was supposed to be. A lightweight, maneuverable, fun to ride motorized ski that was easy to load and easy to store in a corner of your garage.

If they had made a new, lightweight 1000cc 4-stroke three cylinder engine that fit in the standard sized SXR, that would have been a really great new machine.

What's also disappointing is it’s so big it won’t fit on the rack across the back of my van like my current SXR does. For that matter, it wouldn’t even fit in the van, and it'l be difficult to get in the back of a pickup, being too heavy for a couple of guys to pick it up and load it. So if you get one, it’s going to need a trailer and then it takes up all that space in your garage. Not to mention the fact with a trailer you can only drive 55 mph out here in CA. That sucks as I like being able to run at 70 mph+ when heading to Parker or Havasu.

I’m sure they’ll sell a bunch of them, but I’ll definitely be waiting to see how they go and hopefully get a chance to ride one loooong before I would consider getting one.

At least we finally got to see what it looks like and read all the specs.

It will still fit in my Suburban, I might need two people but...

I've been looking at this thing for two days out here (WF), it is huge! It is definitely a racing package! In my opinion it is not going to be a recreational play ski, you have to see it in person to get the scope of it, I have both Superjets and Sxrs and free ride, surf and flat and I would not consider one of these for that type of riding, racing and running the course maybe a different story! For racing I think this is a home run, for average ridding, like most of us do, I'd say look else where.

It doesnt look all that big there. Looks like a lot of the extra length is in the nose. Maybe itll still handle like the old one.

The person who posted this on facebook called it a paddle board.

Its an absolute barge. You really wont understand until you're standing next to it. Yea, cool, it will haul ass in a straight line. What about all of us racers that were enjoying the sport in its current form up until last week? We just got screwed. In case you didn't know, the IJSBA effectively made every ski model besides this one illegal for racing beside GP/Open (and that will probably change too). This is the final nail in the coffin of racing IMO.

I agree. After all, a unicycle with training wheels isn't really a unicycle anymore, now is it?

Yamaha is sitting back waiting to see what happens with this thing before they make their next move.. for the better I would think..

It would be great if Yamaha made a second Superjet model - the "Type-R" for racing, with a 4 stroke wedged into the current hull. The original SJ could be called the "Type-F", with no changes whatsoever, keeping the 2-stroke grandfathered in for EPA reasons. Boom. Both groups of riders satisfied.

Where are you seeing this?

Hopefully Yamaha counters Kawasaki's barge with an attractive offering. I wouldn't hold my breath though. I so wish Kawasaki would have wedged the smaller engine into this new ski and kept the size down.

You've hit the nail on the head. I have no interest in drag racing, which is apparently even how Kawasaki demoed the new ski, putting it up against the old SX-R. If I wanted to drag race I'd buy a couch.

Also, I can't see this new ski "carving up a buoy course" as Kawasaki continues to claim in their press material, at least not to our satisfaction.

I see there is still 5 lbs of extra glue in the hull.

That's a real bummer. That defines the class and will force Yamaha to also make a pig if they want to complete in the class. Or they would be making a craft that just runs in the open class.

We should just keep racing the way we have been and ignore the new class structures outside of world finals. we already don't follow major portions of the rulebook so why should we let them force this down our throats
