I tuned a 997 engine for a mate a while back. I don’t really tune other people’s skis anymore—I’m too busy, and to be honest, I just can’t be bothered. We installed a Zeeltronic ignition but kept the stock carbs, and surprisingly, it ran really well.
I told him I could make it go, but I couldn’t guarantee how long it would last—these engines are known to be weak. There’s been plenty of talk about the 997, and most of it is true, for good reason. One thing I heard was that running high-compression domes would cause it to burn through spark plugs every tank. But in this case, we got lucky—the plugs are still holding up fine after 3–4 months of hard riding.
It’s running our V3 curve, and with the high-compression domes, it really comes alive. The only issue is that the pipe is way too wet and needs drying out, but we haven’t had a chance to sort that yet since he hasn’t been back. Maybe this winter, we’ll tweak it some more.
Personally, I wouldn’t own a 997 or 1200 engine—they’re just too fragile. But I have to admit, I’m surprised at how well this one runs.
