New SJ Owner With Questions

So I just got a 93 650 sj for a good deal, that catch was that it has some issues. I have a few questions that I would appreciate if someone would be kind enough to answer.

-My midshaft bearing has a decent amount of play in it. I did some reading on other posts but no definitive answer. Is this normal? If not, how hard is it to press out and press in a new bearing? I come from an 1100zxi where the bearing comes in a rubber plate that breaks and fills the hull with water. This looks a little nicer to deal with as the bearing just seems sealed to the midshaft housing and the housing sealed to the hull.

-I have been looking at SOLAS YB-IG-B intake grates (as mine is broken) but I am getting different answers from different ebay vendors as to that if it will fit my 650. Some vendors have them listed as 94+ 701 skis and some have the 650s listed as well. Will the SOLAS YB-IG-B fit my 650sn?

-I found the reason my ski didn’t want to turn over was a stator cover filled with water that froze the starter. I will replace the gasket but is there anywhere else for water to get in there besides the starter oring, stator wires, and gasket?

-The exhaust hose coming off my waterbox is severely deformed, is this normal for clearance? I imagine not. Does anyone know a method that I can use to try to get it back to its original shape? (see pics)

-My "hydroturf" is peeling off due to the adhesive coming off. If I take the "hydroturf" off and remove the old adhesive is there a commonly known marine adhesive that I can spray on to make it stick again?

-I found two random rubber pieces in the hull when taking everything out. Does anyone know where they go? (see pics)
Thanks!

the flat rubber piece goes either under the water box or gas tank for insulation. cant tell what the other one is from that photo. as far as the exhaust hose, you might be able to heat it with a heat gun and be able to reshape it if you are trying to pinch pennies or go riding before the new part would arrive but for a nearly 20 year old hose id just replace it. I believe Rad Dudes sell those but you can also get them from tons of other suppliers. As for the intake grate, the bottom of the hull is the same from 1990-2008 so i cant see why it wouldnt work, but i could be wrong. Probably a question for which ever part supplier you purchase through or maybe someone here can chime in.

1.Rebuild the midshaft yourself or send it to someone who can
2.Put an ad in the “want to buy” section for a scoop grate
3.On the leaking front cover,it looks like you named all the areas where water comes in.New gasket and o rings. @JetManiac or @HighSpeedIndustries.com for parts (HSI is on FB).Several sealants available to apply a thin coat on the gasket and o rings.Research...
4.Buy a new exhaust hose or good used one from the above mentioned suppliers or place an ad in “want to buy”.Don’t waste time on trying to fix the old one,it will only bring you more problems.
5.Dap Weldwood is the glue of choise.lf you want help or advise PM me and l can help. You will 5 posts to contact other folks on here.

Google is your friend and most of the time it will bring you right back here. And be careful who gives you advise!

Now get busy;) lts already July

Thank you guys so much! Both of your responses are a big help. I put two WTB ads on for the hose and the grate (And helps me get my posts up so I can PM :)). Thanks for the suggestion of the FB Vendors, Id rather use them then random people off of eBay. I will also be needing a spark arrestor/air cleaner (mine is completely missing) and a steering cable (mine is frayed into oblivion). Thanks!

Hard to say from the pic, but I think the smaller rubber block slips over the front of your battery box to insulate it from the fuel tank.

When you pull the stator and check your orings , put some sealant where the base meets up to the flywheel housing. Also put a little on both sides of gasket. And since you had water in there a while, make sure the bendix is in good shape or you’ll be in there again soon when it starts sticking.

Just keep asking and researching, you’ll knock it all out. If you find it hard to manage the search engine here, search on google and filter the results to this site. Welcome to the addiction!

Thank you everyone. As I continue to know this out I pressure washed the inside of the hull to discover the large area of fiberglass repair was done by...... polyester resin . I will post pictures of the infected area later tonight but it looks like I will be doing some fiberglass repair with epoxy resin as well. It’s multiple areas and they are not small. I got the ski for $500 and I believe the PO fixed the ski with what he thought was the right way, I don’t believe he did it on purpose, he just didn’t know. Should have the motor running by today though! I want to make sure the motor has the ability to run good before I sink more money and time into it (pun intended).

Also the rubber in the mid-shaft housing is starting to separate so it looks like I will need to replace and rebuild it instead of just rebuild. With that comes my next question that I couldn’t find a solid answer to. Is it possible and easy to swap in the larger more durable 94+ mid shaft housing in my 93? Or will I need to stick with a replacement from the 90-93 range?

Thanks!

It depends on which rubber you’re talking about. If it’s the ring against the shaft, you just need a rebuild kit. Get a good one with Koyo or another quality bearing, not cheap crap from eBay or Amazon. If it’s the outer rubber portion with the arrow below, then you need a new midshaft housing. #JetManiac is a good source, plus Watcon and others here and in FB ski groups.

John or someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe you can use any SJ midshaft up through ‘07, and maybe to today. Some Blaster models fit too (think that’s what I’m have in my 91). Just specify what year your hull is and they’ll help you. You know you have one of the newer stronger ones if it has the grease fitting I circled, or at least a plug where the fitting would be on the right side. The earlier smaller ones without it aren’t as durable.

It is in the vulcanized spot with the red arrow so I will need a new one, my current housing has the grease fitting but from what I have read, they started that in 93 but it is still on the older and weaker housing. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I discovered some pretty horrendous things today, please feel free to read the thread below and give your opinions. Thanks!

I will reply here as well.

Looks like you have a ski that has had a pretty hard life. I wouldn't be afraid to fix that.... We use West system Epoxy here when doing repairs. If it were me, I would strip the ski completely. Make it a good off season project, go over EVERY thing, and build a nice, solid ski for next year. It is a Super Jet, and IMO worth saving. We have done much worse here. Do not cut corners, take your time, and you will have a nice ski when done.

You could pay a lot more for a ski, and it could still need a ton of work. Trust me, There are many out there that are hacked together.

To answer your mid shaft question - 90-93 are the smaller housing, and do not interchange with the 94-later. Mounting bolt spacing is different. We have NEW housing assemblies for 90-93 here.

sounds good and thank you, Im currently debating on rebuilding or handing it off to someone else.
as far as the housings go, if I do decide to keep the ski I will come your way for the housing!
thanks
