RE-confirming that refoaming is the worst job - UPDATE post 181

I started tonight. I'm replacing my 24/7 Millenium (old style) footholds with Watercraft Factory new style, doing 25mm underpad, refoaming, reinforcing inside, moving my trim cable, etc.

So far I have the left side and bottom turf off, and have semi-destroyed the left foothold. One thing, I put these suckers in there properly, and 24/7 footholds are TOUGH, which makes taking them out a NIGHTMARE.

ive been there, darin. took out my 24/7's to install my wcf new style holds. a unique thing about this install is that it allows you to put the holds further back than you normally would because you end up cutting more of the ski than you normally would if you were installing the holds onto a virgin ski.

sounds like you havent got to the worst part yet - DEfoaming. yeck!

I felt lucky when I cut my cyclones out and put those waterdawg hold in. Those were so big that it was like I was installing them into a virgin hull. Most of the points where the cyclones connected were removed anyway so I almost had fresh glass to mount to. If you need any tools or need a hand let me know.

Why is this a good thing?
Both smitty and myself put our footholds right up against the exhaust pipe.
(smitty actually took a hammer to his pipe in order to get them even farther forward).
With all the pole shortening that Darin did, I would think he would also want them forward.
What is your reasoning for having them farther back?

I too would agree that some people have their footholds so far rearward that you are constantly leaning over to the point where riding is uncomfortable. Also, if you mount them too far rearward, doesn't it make it more difficult to come up on plane if you have the nose up too high say after landing a wave with the tail first? Or how about in a tail stand and riding out of it? It seems your weight isn't far enough forward to level off the ski. Does anyone understand what I'm talking about?

So far, I've got the left foothold out (in 4 pieces) and discovered some wet foam, all around the bondline so far. The right side is the bad one based on how badly it leans in the water.

And, my air chisel is AWESOME for this. That combined with my 12" pry bar has done pretty well so far.

FFH's are for surf, I don't ride that enough anymore to warrant it. Besides, on big jumps/reentries/etc I like to just tuck my back foot toes in the foothold and keep my front foot loose.

i agree with you geek.

i think with the current trend of -2,-4,-5...etc.. pole/steering setups, you'd want to be more forward.. not even further back.. you putting in an FFH too jett?

I've ridden some setups where I have a hard time balancing because the footholds are so far back and the bars are so far forward. It's tough to turn I think. Maybe I just needed more time on the ski.

Had the same problem with Moondance's ski recently. It kept taking on water and would lean on the right side. We had installed footholds during the winter and I knew that the tray area was repaired and tight. Finally found out that it was leaking through the bond line and the screw holes. I ended up using 5200 all along the bond line seam and silcone to seal the screws when installing. No more leaks yet!

Looks like CPR man is having the same issue right now, he just installed a trim lever and noticed water running out from the foam area.

Here are some camera-phone shots.

I decided not to take real pics of this process and just focus on getting it done so I can ride again.
