RE-confirming that refoaming is the worst job - UPDATE post 181

The plugs are ¼” pipe plugs and on the inside of the hull is a piece of 101 nylon epoxied in to accept the threads for the plugs. I pull them from time to time and get about a cup of water out and when I refoamed I sealed every possible leak.

Ok, here are the before and after defoaming numbers.
engine/electrical/exhaust: 96 lbs
hull/hood/pole/pump/wet foam/turf/footholds: 200 lbs
battery/full gas tank: 45 lbs
total: 341 lbs in running condition with wet foam
314 lbs with no gas (good estimate)

After, the hull/hood/pole/pump weighed 170.5, so I took out 30 lbs of foam/water/footholds/turf. I figure I'll put at least 5 lbs back in, so I probably had 20+ lbs of water in there.

I've moved my trim cable to the very top left of the pump cavity so it will line up almost exactly with my attachment point on the trim ring, moved the scupper inlet to the bottom left of the intermediate housing instead of a couple of inches off the bottom side. It's about 3" lower total, and right by the bilge pump now.

Everything is sealed up and I just epoxied one of my tray access plates back in and am making up some flat glass pieces for putting the other plate in plus filling some gaps after the WF footholds are in since they are much lower than the 24/7 I took out.

Oh, also found out my intake grate is cracked, will have to get that welded, and my Concord impeller has a pretty good sized clearance now, so Impros will get a call soon. Paul noticed some prop slip at Lanier, he was right, like normal!

soo not looking foward to doing this but i have to do the same.

where was the water coming from?

i know mine is got to be wet cause i see it drip from the bond line after every time i ride. so i figure might as well refoam, reinforce and install foot holds all at once...

what weight foam do you have to put back in? and how much of it is required so i know for future knowledge.

I'm not sure the density of my foam, it's from a local boat repair shop that has it in bulk. I got 2 quarts (1 of each part) for $40, and from my test batch it felt like 3 or 4 lb, and since 3 is not sold by some companies, I imagine it's 4 lb. It's the same stuff sjweber did his ski with and he said it came out pretty hard.

I think my water was coming in from around the pump bolt inserts on the right side, the bondline all the way around, and the trim tube, steering tube, water lines, etc.

if anyone is looking for a good way to clean the last little bit of foam out of your hull so can make sure everything is sealed proper, you can use a pressure washer it works great:biggthumpup:

Great.

I spent most of today glassing in my footholds only to come home and see this thread.

I guess I'll cut them out again and destroy the rest of the tray, it's seal and re-foam time.

I see you just sealed the bond line and inserts , should the bond line be strengthened as well ?
Got a picture of the back end ?
I don't have a trim system but it might be a good idea to get a pipe in there for the future.

When you put the tray back together do you just glass in the pieces you cut out or do you add some sort of backing/support ?

I did not reinforce the insides yet, but will before putting the holds in, as long as my resin is still good. So far it doesn't appear to be setting up so I'll have to get some new West Systems. Mine is a few years old now.

There are a ton of ways to do it, that is one. Some people fill it with 4 lb foam then glass it, some fill it with epoxy with adhesive filler, some don't do anything to it.

Thank you, Sir.

I guess I can call today's efforts a waste and I can go back and cut the whole tray out.

I like the drain plug idea, might have to look for some of those.

Are we talking about the bond line in the tray area?

Darin, why did you use that black stuff and not epoxy resin?

I wanted something flexible. Plus it was $5. It's from PL, Roof and Flashing Sealant. Waterproof, sticks to everything, but still removable barely. Very comparable to 5200 fast cure, but a little more removable.

The old guys that worked for my grandfather building houses in the 60s used to call it "black mammy". That stuff is evil sticky and nasty, the 3M Windo Weld is more expensive but is equally nasty, sticky, evil. I used it to seal in my replacement pump shoe a few years back. I think it will out last the whole ski!!
