I had some luck when I went to register the BoB. Basically everything was good except for some sort of emissions certificate. There was a DMV employee right next to me on the other lane that overheard the lady helping me "You paid 20K for a jet ski?". He was a stand up rider. He didn't do it very often but he had some friends that were big into it. I went to go get my hood that had a exemption sticker on it, and by the time I got back, he squared everything away with the lady that was helping me. Depending on who you get, could be easy or less than easy.

Yeah, no. I printed up the hull I had from the Trinity page,DASA page,Boyesen, Novi etc. I did'nt want them to give me the jimmy jam if something happened to that ski. If you are concerned about potential loss I beleive youre better off in the long run with actual values. I don't like paying the taxes either, but thats just me. Glad the OP was able to take care of it,unfortunate the golden state is coming after guys for taxes but that really shouldnt be a surprise.

fixed that for ya..

I'm goin through the same thing right now with my ROK
DMV told me the same thing.. get the bill of materials and go see the "Hull Master"
Then they assign me a Hull number...
At first they were like .. show us the cert of origin ..and I just told them I made it myself.. so they said ok u need to go to the hull master then
Looks like I'm rocking some 550 registration til I get it done lol!
Its summer and I wanna ride it!

Dmv assigns the hull number. You're going to have to print out the ca dmv regulations and bring them in with you. You're also going to have to provide a bill of sale for the Rok. You can't expect a dmv employee to know how to register a home built boat. Show them their own documentation.

Mine was super easy which is a major surprise dealing with CA dmv. Bring them some sort of materials list or invoice from your builder. Fill out boat 101 form, Tell them it was a kit that you built, and pulled engine and everything from a wrecked yamaha Jetski and write the same on a statement of facts. I got my hull number, reg, and stickers on the spot and a title in a couple weeks

Ya I should have checked on Xh20 before I went down to the DMV..
I had the statement of facts filled out but not the bill of materials or the boating 101 packect..
I bought the ski used with no title so I have no bill of materials. .
I think I can just whip one up though. ..
So looks like I got a lil bit of work to do on the computer and another DMV appointment and I should be good..?
Thanks for the help everyone!

Registering a custom ski in CA…the easy way.

Step 1: Throw together some sort of materials list/invoice that seems believable-ish. (No less than $500)

Step 2: Drive down to your nearest shady, “private DMV services” establishment. The kind of place that specializes in getting illegal aliens their drivers licenses and vehicle registrations with forged paperwork.

Step 3: Give the lady your paperwork. Have her tally up all of the totals and fill out the forms. Sign the documents. Pay her what the registration will cost plus $50-60 for her time to go file it for you at the DMV.

Step 4: Drive home.

Step 5: Drive back to said shady establishment the next day and pick up you registration and stickers.

Step 6: Go ride.

Ya I've been to one of these places before to do a title transfer on a car when I didn't feel like waiting at the dmv...
I'm gonna start putting together a list soon.
Until then I just put the cf numbers from my old 550 on it and the registration. .
Lake I go to is pretty chill so not to worried..
But I definitely wanna be legit sooner than later..

Another benefit of having a legit registration and title is insurance. I spent some time on the phone and email this week with an underwriter and the registration stating make, model and year was the first thing on his checklist.

Registration in CA is a no-brainer, it's obvious that they just want the money!

  • This is straight from the CA dmv website and the same thing my local DMV told me to do.
  • A completed Application for Title or Registration.
  • A filled-out Statement of Construction.
  • Proof-of-ownership documents, like receipts and bills of sale. A motor vehicle bond will be required if proof of ownership cannot be obtained for parts valued at $5,000 or more.
  • A vehicle verification done by the California Highway Patrol. Make your DMV registration appointment before scheduling the CHP vehicle verification.

Ha! WTF does the CHP know about jetskis?

All they know how to do is give window tint tickets, which is hilarious, cause I have a local CHP office near me, and all those same A-holes have blacked out tint on their personal vehicles.

/rant off... Sorry, sore subject for me haha.
