some people arnt looking for a pleasant ride..they are looking for a ski they can stick the handlebar in the water when they are turning they have it laid over so far, if they could do that and do the circus tricks id be all for em..BUT..ive yet to see an aftermarket hull that can come close to doing that..they are like bathtubs with training wheels..

if i wanted pleasant id get a sea doo

Yah I agree, there are people who want that.
And there are people that want hulls that are very twitchy and a blast to ride as circus boats.
I have friends that absolutely love SXR style rides.
Still others love sitdowns.

I don't belittle any of them. Everybody finds their own style.
I spent a few years on a stockish Squarenose and a Roundnose. I know how to ride 550's and SXR's. I think I've ridden those boats for enough years that I know what puts a smile on my face.
My original comment was aimed at the notion that all aftermarket hulls are single purpose backflip boats.

wait..so its not all about the backies???

im pretty sure the ones that arnt considered purpose built backflip boats now were when they came out...

compared to the new clown boats they seem like all around hulls but at the time (2 or 3 years ago) they were made to do backflips (fs1, rev, lightweight de etc etc)

pretty soon people wont be able to find their own style because the only skis that will be left will be short wide turds that dont lean past 10degrees...

its ok it not like im bitter about it or anything..

Keep in mind that all I do is rec-ride - I chase boats, we chase each other around to pump blast ourselves in the face, we run a lap around a buoy course, and I flip & roll a lot (I guess that part isn't rec-riding).

The one hull I have a lot of experience on (SF) did almost all of that better than my Superjets, all the time. It was more fun to ride in just about every condition.
There are others I am not so sure about (BOB G1 & G2), and still others that from my limited riding I can see as also being very good at it (Q8 & Rickters)

As for the rest of your argument (Older a/m hulls feeling like all around hulls now, new hulls not being able to lean, etc.), you can apply that all the way back to any OEM hull after the 440/550. Compared to those, the SJ was a LOT flatter turning. It didn't feel like a waterski attached to your leg like the 550 did. Same with the Octane - turns flat compared to older boats. SXR - weighs twice as much as 440/550's, can't do the same nimble maneuvres you could do with the older boats.

If I were into racing, I'd have a built SXR or a nice 08+ SJ. If I were into super technical surf riding 100% of the time, it'd probably be a nasty old SJ.
But, all I do is futz around on the river. For that, I know what I like.

by better/more fun do u mean easier or more high performance??

..thats the difference..i dont want a ski thats easier to ride..that takes the fun out of it..

also keep in mind when you rode superjets you rode in the footholds 100% of the time so im not sure you were grasping the capabilities of the ski..i remember when i let u ride my backup ski circa 2007 and i asked you what foot u put forward so i could move the foot straps accordingly..you looked at me like i was crazy haha

Hah, I remember that. I rode Superjets until 2010 and I got over the "always in the holds" thing probably sometime in 2008. It made the riding a whole lot more versatile. I don't know I rode like that before. Thanks.
By "better/more fun" I mean I have more fun doing those things with the SF I used to have than with the SJ. It was better at chasing boats because it wasn't as prone to chine-walking and tipping when riding along boatwakes length wise. It was better at going fast because it had more side-to-side stability (I know you think that's a bad thing). It was better at sliding around, turning very quickly, being twitchy and very maneuvrable.
I wouldn't say it's better for everything or everyone. It sucked on the buoy course. It took a lot of energy to ride in surf (even worse with a big motor). But for the majority of riding I did with it, it was perfect and in every way better than the SJ. Now, was it $8k better? Depends on who you ask. If I had to answer objectively, I'd probably say no.

just remember any of the negative handling characteristics of the SJ can be negated by one thing..more throttle...

i feel like a sj rewards you with being aggressive..the harder you push it the better it works...i remember when i first rode one, it did feel like it turned flat..but after some tubbies and practice the thing feels like a slalom waterski..

Has anyone ever made a FX1 bottom deck that is SJ width? That could be a fun ski.

These little boats seem like fun but that little tray looks like its built for "little people"

i want a superjet that it the same width (bottom deck) as an fx1...basically a superjet thats 3" narrower but the top deck is the same...

i dont like the pole pivot location or the tall hood on the fx even though my hero scott watkins designed it..

Believe it or not, the FX and SJ bottom deck widths are nearly identical (SJ may even be a hair narrower), but the top deck is wider and as a result, has wider rails (same concept as the circus boats, just not as wide). That''s why the SJ is so stable compared to the FX. When I ride a SJ it feels like it turns very flat compared to what I'm used to.

Measure them......you'll be surprised!

hhh
i have a 550sx i got out of a storage locker im gonig to fix up in the meantime

ill make a tribute to scott watkins video in a few months haha

I love my 550 I'm ready to
Sell the sj off but the 550 is staying. I'm would really like to get it in the surf at some point only ridden sj's and x2's in the surf.
I also love the fact that to ride one aggressively you have to keep it pinned!

Heh. I'm not a multiple ski guy (been there, spent that money) but I keep toying with the idea of buying a 550 for myself and the kids. I love the way it rides.
