Finally got a chance to start working on my ski again! Little bit of a long weekend with today and money off, so I have a little bit of extra time.
Yesterday, I got the DA(Dual action sander) and went to town with some 80 grit! Sanded down to bare metton in many places, and it was pretty easy with that DA and a good air compressor. Then sanded it down by hand with 60 grit, and then I roughed everything up with a 36 grit sanding disk by hand. I also cut out and trimmed the panels to fit. Unfortunately, they didn't sit exactly like I wanted them to(the side ones), but they still will definitely get the job done!! They panels are just 1208 biax, and they're not for structural purposes. Basically just to give me a flat surface to glass over.
I epoxied and screwed them on, and then filled in the gaps with the thickened epoxy the best that I could. The epoxy didn't fill the bottom gaps completely in every spot, but it did enough so that it'll be easy to lay the glass. Tomorrow, I'll remove the screws, grind off the excess glass, do some more sanding and prep, and finally get glassing my tray! I've gotta get this thing ready for the dells..
I'll upload some pics from my phone in a few minutes.

It's finally starting to come together now.

I've got tom21's big footholds to put in. But I'm glassing the tray and everything before I install. Easier to cut out the holes for the holds and have a sturdy surface to screw the holds in so they flex and sit flush. The bottom of the holds aren't perfectly flat, so yeah.
It's easier to do it the way I'm gonna do it. That'll be the easiest part of the build.. Lol

That's pretty slick toby! But it wasn't really that hard with what I did. just lay some glass on some wax paper and cut it to shape. Cheaper that way.. The widened tray version probs wouldn't work with my footholds either. Tom's footholds nearly touch the outside gunwale.
I'm off to go work on it right now again..

That's what I ended up doing

Gotta wonder, what's with everyone using biax in their builds? Easy to build thickness?
It does more than just build thickness quickly. With the way biax is stitched together, it has excellent strength and stiffness in all directions. It's awesome for structural purposes. perfect for trays, etc.

Screws removed! The panels bonded very well. Removing the screws didn't make them move at all really!
One layer of 1208 for the panels, so they are still pretty flexible. Screws were necessary to keep them straight, otherwise they would have curved in.. I probably would have done 2 layers or more originally, but I wanted more of a chemical bond compared to just glassing in already thickened panels. Now I have lots of area for glass to bond to the bare metton part of the hull.
Even though the thickened epoxy didn't cover all of the gaps, it worked amazing for bonding all panels together. They don't flex nearly as much as they did before now. It'll definitely hold the weight of some biax no problem.
I only had two screws that were filled with epoxy, but a nice sharp pick worked well and they came out easy.
Some pics of screws removed and a better look at things. I had a huge gap on the right side that I had to use a separate piece of glass, but it won't make a difference.

Excess ground off with Dremel, and then feathered.

Talk about being pissed.. Looks like the glue that holds the sand onto the paper disk for the DA came off wile sanding. I have never had this happen. It kinda comes off with lacquer thinner and rubbing, but there's still some residue.. This didn't happen before.
