Security surveillance camera

Anybody using camera systems at their house? If so, what system do you have? Likes or dislikes.. Looking at buying a system for our newly purchased first home! Probly gonna hit up Costco or Sam's club tomorrow and check out what they have in stock.

Do yer research. There are so many options.

My wife wanted to get one , I reminded her there are 2 GS dogs sitting in the living room.

These are the cameras I am using to helping a friend upgrade his existing system:
http://www.amazon.com/USG-5MP-Bullet-Security-Camera/dp/B00LEIEC6K/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1419657538&sr=1-2&keywords=USG 5MP camera

He has an existing system with a 16 port capture card but the 12 cameras are older camera that use an NTSC signal so they are standard definition rather than HD. Standard defintion is about 640x480. The cameras listed above can do 1080p 1920 x 1080 @ 30 fps or even 2592 x 1920 @ 10 fps.

We will connect a few of the new cameras to a Power over Ethernet (PoE+) switch so he only has to run one cat5 from the switch to each camera.

We are going to change the software on his existing Windows 7 DVR system over the Blue Iris.
http://blueirissoftware.com/
Blue Iris will be able to record from both the existing capture card and the new IP based cameras. I have not used Blue Iris yet other than installing the free demo but have heard good things about it.

I have confirmed Blue Iris is compatible with the cameras listed above.

You can use some IP webcams without a computer and record to an SD card in the camera. Some cameras have a web server built in to monitor the live feed or to review saved motion. If you only need one or two cameras that might be an OK option for you.

edit: Originally had this PoE switch
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...62205&cm_re=PoE_switch-_-33-150-153-_-Product
but changed it to a PoE+ switch since the camera specs say 2A@12V which is 24 watts.
PoE is the 802.3af standard with a max of 15.4 watts
PoE+ is the 802.3at standard with a max of 25.5 watts

I finally got mine setup at the new house. I am only running a single camera but have plans to add several more.

I am currently running iSpy on a dedicated server but plan to switch over to Milestone at some point. We used Milestone at work and were very impressed with it. I went with iSpy to start because it was free and much easier to set up and I was able to set up webviewing to my smartphone for a small monthly fee.

My main camera is a sony Ipela SNC-RZ50N with more bells and whistles than you can shake a stick at. I have it set to only record on motion and automatically track movement so it follows whatever it sees.

Both my wife and I are weirded out by the idea of having a camera inside the house so that will never happen.

Me and my wife feel the same way about having a camera inside the house... Only going to install them in the kids rooms.

My cheap crappy system recently gave out, so I'm shopping for a new one. I'm leaning toward a 1080p POE system, but they are so dang pricey.

My last system didn't have enough resolution to see a license plate or even recognize an unknown face, so I'm definitely wanting to step it up on this one.

Last week, Amazon had this system on sale for $799 or $899, but they didn't have any in stock, and it was so early in my research that I didn't want to pull the trigger. I think I may have missed a good deal. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KXB496M...olid=6XTKP6Y88LWX&coliid=I2BXX80EZDKXF5&psc=1

Looks like a no brainer at that price. The reviews sound promising as well and really point to the 16ch receiver with the input triggers being the way to go.

Ended up ordering this one off amazon. The lorex didn't have good reviews. http://www.amazon.com/Q-See-QT5682-8E3-1-8-Channel-Surveillance-High-Resolution/dp/B00I3DOZHK

I had briefly considered ordering this system, partially because I already have the cables that would work ran to the current cameras. I was afraid I wouldn't be happy with the resolution and decided to look at the 1080p POE IP systems. When you get yours installed, would you mind giving us a review and possibly post some stills to show us the resolution and if you can actually read plates and identify faces?

Will do!

Buy the highest resolution cameras available at the time. The only thing more frustrating than not knowing who was on your property is paying $$$ for a surveillance system to provide you with a very grainy and distorted image so you still can't identify who was on your property.

I have a very expensive, but now dated, Sony PTZ camera and the resolution is still not what I would like. Even in broad daylight you can't make out enough detail to absolutely identify a person without a doubt. In it's day it was considered the pinnacle of surveillance cameras but now it's pretty mediocre with only 640x480 resolution. It probably doesn't help that it looks through a very poorly tinted window. I'd love to buy the matching weatherproof housing for it and place it outside where it belongs but the housing alone is in the $800 range. The camera itself used to retail at $2200.

It's back down to $957 with 3 in stock at Amazon.

Q-see 8 Camera System, works very well we bought it from Costco had no problems been running for 2 years
If you have a 2 Story home mount them single story high to get better images, you can have alerts set , like motion etc, has an app for phone so u can monitor anywhere you like if you are away from home.
