Selling hulls with a HIN or selling HIN tags without a hull---legal???

Let's see where this goes. (keep it at discussion level, not argument please)

People sell hulls all the time without HIN tags/title, and HIN tags are sold some as well. Is it legal? Is one legal while the other not?

They are both illegal... however, so is freestyle jet skiing.

As long as nothing is stolen in any part of the process (selling a stolen ski without a hin or selling a hin to a guy who just stole a ski) then it is ethically fine.

Both illegal, however unless you are the police (or the sellers mom) you should mind your own buisness, if they want to break the law it is their choice.

What about moving the HIN to put a scupper in? Taking it off to paint, then putting it back on?

The HIN on a vessel is under the same rules of the VIN on a car. It is illegal to move or tamper with it in any way, except by those that are qualified and have the authority to do so.

If your HIN is damaged or requires movement, you need to get it inspected by the DMV before and after, and follow their advise....

it's a Slap Chop, get it right.

Nah, just continuing a discussion from some other people.

Technically, you're not allowed to do *anything* to the HIN tag without prior written consent from the freaking Commandant of the US Coast Guard supposedly. That includes removing it to paint then putting it back in the same place or moving it to put a scupper in, or whatever.

However, what's illegal and what is ethical are 2 different things, nevermind what actually happens in the real world.

I know Blowsion had some serious issues with some gung ho officers years back that ended up with some customer's skis being confiscated and a huge investigation. I don't know how it ended up, but obviously Blowsion is still in business.

That's why going the home-built route is a lot more convineint here in Michigan. My title says that I have a "2007 Assembled". They even created a HIN for me.

x2...but I aint stickin em on cuz I'm afraid the fall off and then what a pain to get replacements I assume! I keep one in my glove box and one at home.

Same here for Florida, except they don't actually give you HIN plates, just the numbers. I assume they want you to get some plates and install them, but I was never told what to do or given any documentation other than a receipt, a title, a registration, and the registration sticker for my ski. I put the registration numbers on and haven't looked back.

I had to make the plate, but they came up with the number for me.

Matt,

What did the SOS require (forms/documents, etc)?

My Rickter FS-1 is currently a 94' Kawi, haha

Need to get something more legit, and we have another home built machine we are working on now that we will need to get an assemblers title for.

Yeah, nobody should put any moral pressure on anyone. . .except those

jerks who put moral pressure on people. We definitely should put some moral pressure on them not to put moral pressure on anyone else. :smashfreakB:

I have seen a number of skis including one or two of my own where the plastic cracked and busted off. I never found the piece on one and epoxied the other back on. I'm sure they will take my word for it ha ha. lucky there are more than one on the ski.

what if you break your hull in half and need a replacement hull? are yo supposed to transfer to another hull and destroy the old hull or can you change the hull like any other part?? hmm? hmmm?

Replacement hulls don't include numbers. They are sold as a replacement part, and it's the dealers responsibility to transfer the numbers from the old hull.
