Ok, we're working on several different approaches to this, so we'll see where we end up.

  • I have an extra server I'm not using, I can setup Linux on it and have it colocated at a datacenter for under $100/month. The server is over 3 years old though and I'm not great on Linux, just capable.
  • Find a different hosting company that runs PHP properly.
  • Get more advertisers so we can cover a dedicated server somewhere, we'll need several more companies to help support the site/sport or a few more plus donations that would have to be sustained over time.
  • Move the site to my webserver at work. Costs nothing, and it's only a T1 circuit so pics will probably be slow, plus it would only be temporary becuase I really can't do that permanently.
  • There are a couple of other options that have been sent my way.
A dedicated server is the best option IMO. It would allow us full control so we can add all the cool features back and not worry about impacting other sites.

Let us know when you are ready to accept donations, and to what Pay Pal address to send them... I am ready to do my part to support this great site.

One other thing, the reason I'm being so open about this is because it's not "my site" or Paul's or Harrison's, we just keep it pointed in the right direction (we hope). It's the users' site so everyone needs to know what's going on and help make decisions when needed just like what happens with the freerides.

Let me know what I can do to help - as an individual and/or a company....:cheer:

how about having next freeride support the X instead of a community organization? It sounds like one ride a year would fund the X.

Then the rest could help out the orginzations.

Dedicated is probably where we need to be, which means ~$200/month. That's a lot of money. $12/year from all active users would cover it plus provide money for events. That would allow us to bring back all the cool features plus add new ones.

I would like to start a post and get a donation started... Is that ok Admins ? I am also going to ask Ross and Jerry, we were going to Donate the Double Barrel Fund.... I think we found were to do it !

I like the donation idea like we had at PWCToday.
Anybody have any idea how much money that brought in??

that will be first months and then some... then we can start donations. If we move to the big surver and nobody pitches in for next months. I will personally Pay Half ! Cool ?

I'll match Pete's offer. I'll put up the other half of the next months $200 if the donations don't cover it.

What about something like PBS does? where you pay like $10 for a sticker $25 for a t shirt and a sticker and $75 for a DVD, tshirt, and sticker. I also like the idea of how pwctoday had the different levels of supporters. A subscription fee would not attract new members.

Just remember how tight of a community this is and how valuable a resource this site has become to all of us. I like the idea(s) of donations, more advertising, and a designated ride of the year to help cover costs of the site. Rock on bruthas! Keep up the good work Jett!

I dont feel we need to show levels of support kinda like bragging..........

T Shirt, Stickers etc is a good idea, but unfortunately, Like Darin said, we all work full time jobs (50 hrs a week minimum for me). Trying to send out T Shirts and stickers would take entirely too much time, then when we forget to send one out, someone will be screaming bloody murder.........

I say sell it to SBT for a huge chunk of change, then start a new site with the profit
Honestly, I'm all for donations

THat is Awesome Steve ! I keep sending alot of people here and I want
to have us shining... From features to bandwith or whatever the
gigaplexasurver we need. I am so ready to pic up some of the tab.
It will be well worth it to keep our Freeride Family together and then
some. I just sent all the Region 8 racers and riders over here to x... Even
some of the Promoters were showing some intrest... I should Probly bring
some stickers to Wildwood this weekend.

:banghead: God Forbid...pwcyesterday is no fun anymore, and jetskinews gets about 1 new post a week...

I'm willing to pay to play...
JSN seemed like it lost a lot of momentum with the split in the local freeride group, a lot fewer posts.

My 2 cents, throw a paypal donation button up top. Even if 1/3 the users paid the $1 per month it should cover the $200.

It's weird - there's this "PancakePete" guy who used to post on PWCT who was a complete jerk - had a huge sig line and everything! Nothing like the cool, supportive, giving guy that we have over here.... :27:

You rock Pete - you too Steve. Just point me to the Paypal button: I'm ready.

However, from talking with another webmaster running vbulletin on Dreamhost, it sounds like we won't be able to get within their limits on cpu usage due to how they have php setup to run.

Crap, they run it as a CGI....grrrrrrr. I didn't even check for that when I recommended and clearly that is a problem for a larger site (I use them mostly for mom & pop size sites so its never really a problem).

My apologies for that slip.

Let me know what I can do to help.

I'm cool with the $12 a year subscription or a paypal donation option.

I also really like the idea of a "support the X" ride. Or even a support the x donation box at each ride. I think you might acually raise more money with less adminstration work that way.

Heck, rasing money at a ride could acutally be fun...charge for Tigger's and Moons green shots... Photos ops with Par Daddy in his speedo, or maybe we could have that penguin fellow poll dance for tips?

Donations should be optional personally just like pwctoday. I know we all want to help out, but we dont want to scare noobs away by making this a pay site by paying by post or monthly.

Btw, Im down for 25/year for a donation as long as I get a tshirt to represent my site :Banane01: :Banane01: :Banane01: :Banane01: :Banane01: !!!!!!
