Slutty.. Tubbie II Install

I've found the easiest way to do the II's is with a about 4 people. Basically, you get them to where you want them with all 4 people pushing down so the sponson is pushed right into the hull. With 4 people pushing along the sponson, it has the effect of having them installed and stretching out like they would with the screws installed.

Once they are in place, use a marker to outline. Rough up the area within the marker nicely, drill the holes in your sponsons, and hit it with your adhesive. Then, get your mates to again hold it in place, using the outline as a guide, and go along and install the screws.

By doing it this way, you don't have the force of the sponson wanting to straighten itself pulling against the hull that may cause the screws to pull back out/strip.

My mates and I have done a few sets like this, and it is by far the most accurate and least painfull way to do it. Get it right the first time.

Another tip to budding tubbie installers is that the natural molded curve on the tubbie I's make them much easier to install. The II's are somewhat straight, and need bending around the hull to install.

Big props go to Charles (crammit442) for giving me the hot tips when I was in the installation stage!

I did em with one person - definitely take the above advice. And I was on a tight schedule and unexpectedly way too low on resin so I used 5200. Don't do this if you want a seamless install w/o a lot of work. :banghead:

This is a great thread, btw. Awesome tips.

good to hear. I plan on altering a little cause I'm lazy. I'm skipping the mat step.

I will drive down there and kick you in the nuts if you don't do them right

the matte step is nothing... a piece of cake, my brotha

well, I do have the matt and the epoxy resin. I just don't see how adding the matt helps the bond. your epoxying the foam to the matt and the matt to the hull. why not epoxy the foam to the hull? plus mat is the weakest type of glass. I could see some 10 oz cloth or something...

I'd think the bond made by flairing it out is probably the most importaint one anyway. Lemme know what you think.

I also plan on putting my tubbie all the way up 38" forward like you did since my weight is so far forward on my ski. what is the benifit on not going that far forward?

if you saw how tight it was and how much resin gooed out afterward.. it was so tight that resin got pushed through the screw holes w/ the screws still in them... I mean I totally flattened that matte down so hard and it bonded so tight.... It made me feel really good about the whole thing...

the foam might not be totally flush w/ the outside edges of the tubbie either

the flairing is very important too... that way no edges lift

demon, just do it like he says man.....

Nicks instructions are simple and efficient....no overpriced materials, but meticulous...

think about it...if you kill 4-5 hulls in the 3-4 years, you'd have this down to a science!

and with tubbies, thats not the kind of thing you want to have to fix......

I'm in the middle of installing mine now. I just finished the initial screw on install. I already cut the matt as a template, I might as well use it when I put the tubbies back on with epoxy.

I'm rebel, I moved my tubbies up to 38 1/4" I figured since I ride so far forward I needed a little more tubbie up front.

I won some hockey tickets from work so I took my son to the game. I might have to wait until sat. to finish the install. They're a bit of a pain to install solo. I'm a little worried about the epoxy setting before final placement. I've tossed the epoxy resin in the fridge to slow down the curing. I hope to install and flair in before my sunday ride.
