Even after talking with Fuzzy, I’m not a 100% clear why Kawasaki has chosen to discontinue the SXR. They already have the tooling so it’s not costing them anything in R&D. They could sell them as “competition only” craft which are un-register able like Yamaha plans to do with the Super Jet. If unit sales are really that bad, they could make them to order. The un-register able part doesn’t bother me, we already know how to get around that :)

I'm not familair with how assembly lines work. Are you saying Kawasaki only has one line and in order to make SXR's they have to stop making couch's? If the made per order idea won't work it seems like they can make a run of 500 SXR's per year then. Are they not even selling 500 units yearly worldwide?

Their decision to discontinue is not all about economics. The EPA tightened up 2 stroke regulations a couple years ago and their 2 yr extension has finally run out. Economics does come into play when the cost to develop effective alternatives to the 2 stroke can't be recovered with the small standup market.

Thats what I'm not understanding. Hows Yamaha getting away with it? It seems as if they are sold as Competition Only then the EPA regs would not be an issue

That is precisely the case and they are limited to how many they can produce under that restriction.

How much of that is due to low advertising though? It's not like they really pushed sales in the last few years as they only had 2500 units to move per model year.

Maybe this has been posted already, but from http://www.boats.com/blog/2010/09/pwc-update-last-call-for-standups/ he says

Less than 500 units between 2 manufacturers is pretty low.

Yeah I hear you but remember we're in the worst recession since the Great Depression. Its not that potential buyers aren't out there so much as those potential buyers simply don't have the cash. The first thing that goes in a tight economy is the toys. A company that specializes in recreational toys should understand that those numbers are temporary. To completely discontinue still doesn't make sense. Besides, If they cant buy a stock ski for 6K then how many 10-15K aftermarket skis are going to sell? If I ran an aftermarket company I wouldn't necessarily be ramping up with this news

So what your saying is both Yamaha and Kawi are severily limited on how many units they can produce by this restriction and while Yamaha still views it as worth while, Kwasaki is just calling it quits?

I hope your right. I'm good no matter what, I can grandfather a ski together for the rest of my life but I'd hate to have my kids not know the joy of riding skis

its strange the epa would be giving the manufactures such headache over 500 units a yr,there is more going on with the economics of it

I would have a 300SX freestyle ski, a Thunderjet freestyle ski, an X2, a fixed steer 650sx flat deck, a SN superjet, a 787 powered X2 and a 300SX fixed steer build all going on at the same time,I won't even bother to list the sit down builds going on right now, I think I just might have a problem.

Well I would say a bit more than that, I will be asking $1500.00 for the SN when it is completed, besides you can't really put a price on one off , one of a kind kewlness.
