Man, this is the third time I've heard of someone sinking a ski and not being able to find it. It's time to start installing some kind of waterproofed GPS tracking beacon on these things so peeps can go out with a boat and find them, or like the ones that snowboarders and skiers use for avalanche recovery.

I forgot!
Yeah at our cottage we have high banks and everyone's break walls get pounded each year. Wave season has already started and we have regular storms that change the beach and stuff shows up all the time. I will let you know if a stunt hull shows up, I don't want it. Lol.
This bucket we think fell from the erosion of high banks that was buried. Not sure though. The ice does most of the rock moving but the waves on shore have huge undertow back dragging the bottom of the lake. It may show up on shore and then washed back out over and over. Lake Erie is mean and cruel. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1348326360.560132.jpg

Damn! Yea we do have full size trees and railroad ties wash up in the bad months....but they float.

It was absolutely crazy out there the day the ski went down...

We dove under the waves for a long time looking and couldn't find anything at all.

Brings back nightmares. Don't waste your time diving, or with the sonar, I tried both for days and had no luck. Wait for a dead ass calm day, get up in the air and fly over where it went down. It didn't move more than 15 ft from where it went down, if its a sandy bottom. If you can get up in a heli bring a buoy with a weight attached to it and about 100ft of line, get close to it drop it out and then go out and find it. If its calm, you can see 20-25ft deep. ONce you find it, and it was on a sandy bottom, rinse it out, get the water out of the motor and ebox, put fresh gas in and you will be fine. My ski got a few little scratches and thats it. RUNS PERFECT! Good luck.

We are gonna be waiting a long time for a calm day I think...and then a we need a week of them for the water to clear up. We can easily walk/swim to where it went down......just can't friggin see anything!! Ahhhg! I wish I could just drain the area!

This is still my thinking. We just can't get enough days in a row for it to be clear enough.

So many people tell me its stuck exactly where it fell, then others say its moved; both parties with tons of experience. I would REALLY like to find a good sonar to use, no one seems to own one plus I cannot find one to purchase.

My theory on freestyle built skis, get a good insurance plan for it so if u do sink it to the bottom you say o well thank god for insurance. While you are swimming back to shore to call you insurance company be thinking of the new A/M hull you are going to be buying when the check shows up :) leave that one right were it lays on the bottom of the lake's floor.

You find an insurance company that will insure an aftermarket hull and I will send you $100.

An additional $100 from me if they actually pay up.

I know of three other skis that have sunk and never recovered. It happens.
And if you must ride one that you know won't float, for heavens same don't paint it black.

We used a high quality sonar fish finder to find Luke's, it had GPS and he could map an follow a search grid, this way u aren't just randomly driving around, it didn't move an inch from where it went down after several months underwater

I Guarantee a serious fishermen with good sonar can find it on a graph . Talk to some guides or hit the fishing boards in your area and offer a reward for the recovery or marking that leads the recovery ..... I have friends that can find road culverts , road beds and small brush piles in 30 feet of water ....

Visibility not too good.

Could hire a diver and have him search. I guess the trick is to have him go in and 'stake' a rope in one spot on the bottom. He then searches around the stake in circular fashion using the rope as a guide and slowly move outwards. The idea is to maybe rope out 10 feet and drop a rock or weight when you start. Do a complete walk around the stake. Once you come back to your rock, pull out 15 ft, walk around completely. Once you come back to your rock again, pull out 20 ft, walk around completely. Time would greatly depend on visibility I'd assume. IF visibility is 2 feet, I'd assume 5 feet in between runs would be fair. Or hell. Just stake the ground, pull out 200 ft, have him run it around the stake. If it hits something have him go check it. Makes me want to get a scuba license!

No need for a license in that deep of water. If you can't find someone to do it for free, I say just grab a setup off craigslist for a few hundred and do it yourself.
