Other Sunk Ski in Lake Erie...how do we find it...

If I had my boat up there I would help you find it and we would find it. I have the Lowrance HDS LSS side imaging system mounted and they all have down scan now. Humminbird has similar models that you can buy for around $500 used that dont need the seperate LSS module for side scanning. Borrow a small boat and put the transducer on a pole and get it in the water. Hook up a battery to that unit and go to town. You would have probably found it by now with the side imaging/down scan. In 8-16 feet of water you would be able to see the bottom clearly at least 60 feet to port and starboard and directly under the boat at the same time. There is absolutely no way it would be missed or it isn't there...or its completely under the sand but still, there would probably be a hump. The technology is that good. I can count the branches on fallen trees in the lake if I wanted to.

When you are done with the unit put it back up for sale...This is what I would be concentrating on and you dont need water clarity at all.

Good luck, and hope you find it soon.

In addition, these models also have GPS so you will be able to keep another window open on the screen and see your grid path to make sure you have good coverage of the area. Lastly, if you cant find a boat, try to find someone with a kayak that has pedals such as the Hobie models. That way you can pedal around and keep your hands working the sonar and steering. It is going to take a little thinking to mount the transducer pole to the kayak but nothing too difficult. And those Hobies have good storage where you can mount the battery.

Whatever you can do to get out there with the side imaging and down scan...try it.

Wow. That second image is absolutely amazing. What are we looking at in the 1st image? Is that the texture in the dirt beside that object?

The first image is the side scan. Imagine the boat is on the bright white line and at the very top of the screen. As time passes the screen is scrolling down. So what you see to the left of the line is actually to the left of the boat, and what you see to the right of the white line is to the right of the boat. Things you have alread passed by are lower on the screen. The numbers in the bottom right and left corner is the distance in feet to the end of the scanned area. So they are scanning out 120ft on each side of the boat and it looks amazing. You can also move the cursor on the screen and GPS mark anything you want. Then when you switch to map view you can drive right over it and check it out with downscan. The sidescan and downscan imaging requires that the boat maintain a slow moving speed in order to draw the reflections correctly. Humminbird recently designed a tranducer that spins on the bottom of a pole so it can be used even when you are at a stand still and it will paint a 360 degree area around your boat in high res.

The second image is the downscan. It scrolls from left to right as you pass over objects like a standard fish finder you may have seen, except this one is on steroids. It uses a different frequency that creates much higher resolutions and more reflections to accurately paint the object using special software designed into the unit. The side scan is similar in that regards, but is aiming in a different plane, beaming outward instead of downward.

x2^ couches towing a steel line or scuba divers in 2 feet of visibility seem worthless. you need some big boy stuff like matt in houston has. your going on 5 days? i garauntee i wouldnt have my ski sank for near that long...

Interesting comment. Your acting like he's choosing to have his ski missing underwater. He tried all options that he knew of, since that didn't produce any results he contacted others in the watercraft industry for ideas. Until "Matt in Houston" chimed in, we had no idea of this technology or its effectiveness.

Im sure the OP is going to explore his options with this technology. Assuming he can afford the initial investment which hopefully isn't an issue.

I know Bass Pro Shop and Cabellas carry some of those units but I wonder about Walmart sport secrion? They have an excellent return policy...:sneaky:

That's what I was thinking. Set it up with pelican cases and quick connects and rent it out to whomever needs it. Done right. It could be overnighted almost anywhere in the US. It would have to be one of the better units though, nothing like renting equipment that half ass works.

A small towfish that could be run behind a couch would be sweet.

Wow! Matt in Houston, what unit are those screen caps from?

Thanks
-Rob

The shots I posted are from the Lowrance models. They all look the same, the only difference is some models have a larger screen. Also it is possible to change many different settings including the color. The LSS is the brain of the side imaging and it is sold as a seperate unit that plugs into the head unit. The Humminbird products have the brain built in to the head unit, so it would probably be easier to go that route for a quick setup in this situation. Both brands imaging systems can find the ski no problem.

My other suggestion is this. I am a member of a fishing forum here and many folks on there are very friendly and always up for a challange and perhaps some bragging rights. Also many of these fishing forums are very local to discuss fishing on local lakes. I suggest that the person looking for the ski find a local forum that fishes that area and register on their site. Then post the story on there and see if anyone is willing to lend a hand. Maybe offer a reward for the first fisherman to find it. Either way they will get to practice on their electronics and at the same time get to show off how cool their toys are.

Again, good luck!

just currious probably really stupid and i dont doubt anyone who said the avalanche beacon wont work for finding sunk skis. but isnt snow made out of water so whats the difference between 30 feet of snow or 10 feet of water....is the air in the snow that much of a difference....and i fish alot here in florida and your best bet is to hook up with a nice fishing boat. check out the pics matt in houston posted in 161 IT WILL WORK hope you can find it
