Ive ALWAYS wanted a motard! My ideal bike would be a CR500AF with a Motard setup only because I love 2 strokes and I'm that stubborn guy that would mix his oil just to not be on a 450 four stroke... And I've always wanted a CR500 but it's not feasible for racing harescrambles IMO. I was very close to getting a Supermotard this summer but it didn't work out.
A buddy of mine had a DRZ and he was a Parts Unlimited rep. He used it to commute from NH with it daily to the next state that he worked in and had over 30k miles on it when I moved to FL. They are underpowered and he planned on doing a big bore to it and making it a 450 but he wanted to see how far he could go until it blew up. That dude would ride in January as long as the roads weren't icy. Total die hard dirtbike rider! Haha I'd be eating healthy during the week of a race and making sure my bike was 100% before I went to bed the night before... he would wake up in the morning, pound a Mountain Dew and eat Twizzlers then load up his bike that was still muddy from the last race. He pumped up his tires (he didn't use a gauge to check tire pressure he just pushed on the tire with his thumb and said "that feels good"). Then he would burn one in his van before a race (he called it his "moto charge") and get a BJ from his girlfriend. I miss that guy haha
Nick we need to ride some trails soon your 2005 makes my 2008 look like a 1988

Well here it is! 2003 ktm 450exc. It has KTM rims from another model, acerbis headlight, 08 plastics, pro taper bars/mirror, carbon cover on the bottom. Also have the oem orange plastics, but thats basically it. Needs some tlc and new rubbers, but besides that ready to rip. I want to get some hand guards and frame sliders too. Thanks to everyone to lent their opinion. DSCN3763.jpgDSCN3764.jpg

I woudn't go all the way up in one shot. Maybe to 1/4" at a time at most. The way I have my bikes set, 1/4" on fork tube height can ge the difference from a stable bike that corners well to a bike that gets serious head shake and wants to put you on the ground.

It's all about balance. I wouldn't be dropping the fork too far without addressing the rear end as well.

KTMs have more rake than a lot of Jap bikes do. I've kinda been out of the loop for a few years so maybe this changed but his bike is an 05. I'm not saying slide them all the way up is the hot setup but that would be the best way to try the 2 extremes then adjust somewhere in the middle until you're happy. A lot of times you can only go about 1/2" until they touch the bars anyway. Just depends on his bar mounts

I see your point in testing the two ends of the sprectrum, I just don't want someone to drop the forks way down and go into major head shake the first time the charge a corner or have to hit the brakes hard.

That's funny you say the KTM's have more rake. I've only really spent time on 09 250xc and 2010 sx250f and both bikes I felt like I was sitting right on top of the front tire! Can't comment on the older models tho. They felt way different than my Kawi and Yami I was riding during those years tho.
