Custom/Hybrid SUPERFREAK talk

Ok I know this question is very vague, but is there such a ski that is good for both flat and surf? Does anyone have a superfreak as both a flatwater and surf ski? Sees to me that the closest thing to an all around all purpose hull would be the freak. As much as I'd love to have two skis, it wouldn't be possible if I want to buy a freak. What would be the best setup for someone who rides both? I'm thinking a reinforced carbon -4.3 with a JM/B BB and mag pump? I'd think a glass layup would be too heavy for flat, but will a carbon be strong enough for surf? As with everyone, I'd love to (with enough skill) to flatwater flip on my own wake yet still take a beating in the surf.

I use mine as both a flat water and a surf ski. we also chase down huge boat wakes at WOT. This hull will do EVERYTHING you can imagine excellently. It is stable as can be on full throttle runs, It is great in chop, It surfs like a surfboard, I am very hard on my equipment as our boat chasing is the equivilent of predictable surf often exceeding 5 ft in height. Both Ed and Myself have have Freaks that pancaked from very high in the air and ours have survived falls that would have likely cracked and sunk my reinforced roundnose! Not to mention that it weighs about 80-100 lbs less ready to ride. Mine has a 710 JM/blue motor also, it is a fantastic setup!

That is what this hull is all about . Yes it does take skills to FW flip it on your own set up wake with a 710cc motor but it can be done and that was with a full length surf hull . With a big pump and motor @ -4.3 it is a hardcore freestyle comp machine. My next surf ski is going to be -4.3" carbon with a Jetmaniac/Blue big bore motor and my dream FW ski would be a -4.3" with a 1100 Dasa from Brian at Thrust.

So you suggest a carbon hull? -4.3? Didn't both you and ed break your hoods though in the surf? I am sure Tem could reinforce the hull/hood a little more for me so it can take the abuse of someone still learning haha. I just wasn't sure if the carbon would hold up to the abuse. I think the JM/B big bore would be sweet, but I would like to go a little bigger if I could, I know there is such a thing as too big in the surf, but I don't want too little in the flat. I really want to try one of these skis out, I have never even ridden an AM hull before, probably spoil the whole AM field by riding a freak first lol.

Tem, just saw you posted as I did. What would you recommend for an all around ski? Carbon -4.3 would be great for flat but will it withstand surf and be good? Maybe reinforce the hull a little bit and definitely the hood. I am trying to cut it down to one amazing ski if possible, not several mediocre skis. Thanks.

Both our hoods did crack, but the damage is cosmetic, I can stand on it and it doesnt flex. I am going to send tem my hood in the off season to reinforce a bit. I am also relatively sure that we beat on our skis more than any of the other freak owners out there (most of the others actually complete most of their tricks!) Matt may be the only other one out there that sees larger waves than we do on the west coast. ours are both full carbon and the weight difference is soooo worth it!

(Stunts)I heard the JM/Blue Big bore motors hit just as hard or even harder than the xs865. And all the surf guys like the 865 for freeriding. So I think a Jetmaniac 781 would be best of both worlds

The past hoods have been the weak link, we have redesigned and beefed them up with almost twice the carbon content, they can handle the height of the 16mil Dasa, along with a better fit but they are heavier . For a full on carbon surf ski I would go 57 to 62 lbs (bare hull only), yes we have built 48lbs hulls that have been BEAT on without failure but that is close to the edge .

The bottom end power on the JM/B big bore is insane ! on a light ski it is on the edge for surf , I love that instant throttle response, along with 38s crazy fuel sipping run time.

Also Berky has stood behind everything that he does in both of our cases with any issue that we had throughout the entire build proccess. DO NOT let our cracked hood scare you off from carbon, Get the full carbon ski, and think about the shortest ski you think you would feel comfortable with, then get one an inch shorter! I wish I had the Cajones to get the -4.3, but I was scared about the handling, after having actual ride time on it, there is nothing to worry about whatsoever. If you wanna try one come down, we are riding this weekend, only an hour and a half drive!
