The blue dots are the correct resistor. I just got done doing this exact mod on my 6r7. I just replaced the resistor with a lower ohm and it raised my rpm to 8484.

Doing up a few of these this weekend.

I parted out a 91 waverunner III last week and when I opened up the ebox, I found a Protec modded 6M6 CDI. That in itself isn't too out of the ordinary but this unit was labelled "38 - Rev 3" and had an additional hole drilled in the case. So, for those who have mentioned previously that there is a way to possibly modify the timing curve, I believe this is evidence to that point. If nothing else it indicates that protec does more than simply adding the trim pot.

I will map out and verify the timing curve when I get a chance, just thought I'd share for those interested in the subject. :)

So I have some "good news - bad news" for you guys doing the no rev mod but more than anything, just some clarification of a couple points made in this thread.

There are actually 4 different solutions to choose from and I will add a pic later and detail the specifics of each mod.
1 - Adjustable rev limiter with trim pot, 7200 - 9800 RPM.
2 - Fixed limit but raised to 8100 RPM
3 - fixed limit customized by replacing the resistor with specific valued resistors
4 - Limit deleted all together.

As a few guys have pointed out in this thread, there are multiple connection points being shown in pics which is adding confusion. I worked through these differences and will try to make things clearer.

I did this to a pair of 61X CDI's following the same method that augustaf posted and testing shows that they still cut out, but at 8100 RPM.

If you want to delete the limit completely, then you must jumper out the same two points used when attaching the trim pot with resistors.

I can't help you there. I couldn't bring myself to take it apart so I sold it as-is.

I did map out the curve and found it identical to OEM so I'm not sure what other mod they could have done to it other than a repair maybe?

The curve was really all I was curious about, was hoping you unlocked some holy grail of MSD Enhancer alternative. You want to chop up an enhancer to see what it would take to make something similar?

I have a couple here for that exact purpose but it's not a project that is on my radar at all so it won't happen any time soon. Especially with so many other options already available.

Has anyone tried installing a cap/resistor in the pulser line to see if it would regard timing with rpm? It it worked we would have a $3 MSD replacement.

Hopefully this makes things a bit clearer.

- Jumper between the two red points to raise the rev limit to a fixed 8100 RPM
- Jumper between the two blue points to remove limiter altogether or;
- Add a 500K ohm trim pot with 36K ohm resistors between the two blue points for an adjustable limiter between 7200 - 9800 RPM.

The 4th option would be to replace the resistor on the underside of the circuit board, (currently attached between the blue points) with one, or a combination of different valued ones to achieve the desired RPM range. This specific detail can be found within this same thread, I just couldn't be bothered to link it right now.

*** I also verified that the stop function is still fully operational after all of these mods were performed. If yours no longer functions afterwards, then you likely used too much heat when soldering and caused the solder to draw away from a necessary connection point.

When I make the mod I simply remove the 100k resistor & replace with a 50k resistor in series with a 50k linear taper trimpot. If the total resistance falls below 50k the the circuit will not work. The fixed resistor makes the rev limiter adjustable from the stock setting up to about 8500 rpm. This is the same mod that ProTec makes when you send it to them.

You still modifying cdi boxes ro remove the rev limit?

Does this look good? Will this set the limit to 8500rpm?

Looks pretty rough but it'll work and nobody will see it inside the ebox. :)

You can try silicone but my experience is that it doesn't flow into edges so it doesn't make a great seal.

You could use liquid tape as well but you would have to do it in layers. It cures with bubbles and voids if you lay it on too thick.

i did superjett's posted mod last night as shown in the far right picture and it works a treat.
gave the blaster a free rev and had to back off at 8500rpm
will try to give the adjustable version a run in the next day or so.
Hi guys, I know this is a old post, but I´m trying to sort a problem.
Opened up a 62T cdi, soldered the 36K rersitors among the trimpot but rev limiter still operational at around 7100 rpm. I´m a bit confused cause I read that the 100K resitor on the other side of the board has to be cut off? pls advice and thanks!
