Look at saturday forecast for st. auggie:

http://magicseaweed.com/St.-Augustine-Surf-Report/346/

It keeps looking better...

:woot:...That looks good Chris!!! Here’s a link that might help you (anyone) pick a spot depending on size as the reports continually update. I pulled it from an old thread of mine and recall it being set for Sebby, so just enter the different surf spots in for referencing which places will hold what size waves.

Sebby looks to still be holding its own scrolling down for Saturday… so cool it is for anyone interested there as well!

OK, pretty simple here (I am no meteorologist, surf god, etc )...

This is what I was talking about Punk, when I was mentioning Ana and “elevated seas”. I was intentionally avoiding mentioning Bill's name for safety reasons. I could have attempted to explain Ana to you with techie language, but I figured it would be pointless to further address, until it appeared within standard surf sites. PLEASE understand that I am not seeking to publicly humiliate you via this post, as you were attempting to do with me, for that is not my reason for posting this. It is simply crucial that my credibility is not discredited for the sake of your ego, when I issue warnings about safety in these instances, or even most instances; issuing these specific types of warnings is merely something which I am well accustomed to doing please realize. I won’t even waste my time specifically addressing the negative posts made by Moto, Scorn and Emm, for that is just unfortunately their standard nature at times.

I think it is SUPER cool you share an interest in storms with me…I love that about you! :smlove2: I would truly love to meet you in person one day (if we have met already, please accept my apologies for not remembering). It would be wonderful to sit down at Sebby over drinks and talk about weather patterns, waves, and how it all correlates with various types of tropical storms… unfortunately; I don’t believe I will feel comfortable leaving my grandmother this weekend. Additionally, I’m not sure it is wise for any of us in FL to get into the surf this weekend; I’ll check, but I’ve been more focused on what our crazy Yankee ( :jester:) friends are up there contemplating, and I’m a bit too worn out to look into it at the moment (I've simply absorbed too much data today already). ALL of you Northerners (including the Junkies) need to stay completely out of the surf this weekend, even after Bill passes by.

Friday 08/21 ESE Ana swell Lingering
Saturday 08/22 ESE Ana swell early; Reinforcing Bill swell moves in with bigger sets in PM Long period E/ESE swell from Bill moves in; seek out the spots that can handle the swell energy

Luckily we haven't gotten real big surf since 1991's "All Hallows' Eve" storm. If anyone remembers that one? It was a biggen. I remember surfing some "20 foot" waves in Melbourne. There was 35' high deep-water waves hindcast for that storm!!

To bad there isn't a Nor' Easter brewing that could jump in with Bill like what happened with Hurricane Grace in '91.

Hopefully it's a fun weekend!!

Be careful out there people....it's gonna get gnarley! Double up your hoodstraps and maybe tie an extra lifejacket to your handlepole. Make sure your bilges are working and go out with tow loops ready to go....

Took the dirtbike over to the beach 4 times today. Lake flat in the AM, but around 7pm it was solid waist-shoulder high on set.

Ocean City NJ now calling for peak of 17.7ft @ 17secs.

Saturday
Surf: Triple overhead high SE long period swell.
Conditions: Bumpy/choppy with S winds 10-15kt in the morning shifting SSE for the afternoon.

Sunday
Surf: Double to triple overhead high SE ground swell for the morning. This fades into the 1-3' overhead range for the afternoon with occasional well overhead high sets.
Conditions: Clean in the morning with NW winds 5-10kt. Fairly clean conditions for the afternoon with the winds shifting to the W.

I am getting butterflies 2 days out...
Don't get too excited.... the waves are a day or two out.... don't fall into the hype.
Here's St. Augustine this morning....

The spot will be bigger on the outside, which is why it's a great spot, but the wind will be what makes it good or bad!

Sebastian looks almost too big for saturday for this maniac!

I noticed your previous post above to me dear man (and your previous general posts as well). If I can personally play in the “once a year perfect O-side tow-in surf swell”…your “old maniac self":silly:would do just fine in big surf at Sebby, and you know it…you’re a decent rider. I could care less how big of a group shows up where during any freeride…that’s a male attitude in FL only, fortunately nowhere else within this ski network coast to coast. If you travelled more outside of FL, you would be aware of that Chris (tis a totally different scene and vibe all together, and those outside of FL know it). I like you, and I want you to stay safe and have the most fun you can…that’s why I personally post up ride spots when I think they will be good (and I can’t help it if that’s usually Sebby…that’s why I go there, but it’s not always the place hitting).

(This is the best I can do for everyone right now.:Banane37:)

I’m simply thinking this particular surf may not be the time in FL honestly. This is not going to be like pristine O-side surf. This looks like the “perfect storm” for surf in the SE Coastal area, but it is tricky, because it is wickedly deceiving (an interesting cyclone due to many factors). I realize everyone is jonesin due to the summer flats, and the mere fact that we don’t typically get big surf like this, even in the winter time. The surf may appear to be a “dream come true” in many places, but it is the rip currents which are your primary enemy in this instance (surfer died last year in the tropical storm which hit us…wasn’t highly publicized initially…swimmer last week). I do not wish to imply the waves will not be unusually powerful and dangerous, for they will be in different spots at different times.

We currently have a STRONG hurricane in route as most realize, and the seas were already high and turbulent (displaced), due to the wave associated with Ana (as well as other factors). Even though Bill is to track a good distance from us here in the SE (specifically Florida), putting us currently outside of the mariner’s standard danger zone, it should be interpreted as anything BUT safe, for it is indeed NOT. Additionally, the storm continually hooked more westerly than predicted, as many professional discussions outside of NOAA’s official site stated possible (NOAA could not publicly present these discussions, and everyone should realize that I monitor sources which feed into NOAA…NOAA is central hub and has internal divisions as well).

These are not your “normal” dangerous rip current warnings we all personally see when checking surf report stats for standards swells, and these specific warnings with this specific hurricane should be respected and heeded. These rip currents are not the typical small breaks which can be easily seen via the experienced eye; basically the entire sea is a rip, due to the gravitational force of the storm (that force still exists as the storm moves in and off…at certain stages in that time period it will be an even worse pull…intense). Again, the force of the sea due to the cyclone is intense (and always changing understandably).

I will never tell you it is “safe” in getting out there during any kind of storm, I would be remiss in doing so, and I will not have it on my conscience. At the same time, I know everyone realizes that I would never in a million years intentionally cause someone to miss good surf. Again, our “Yankee” friends need to remain out of the water unless things improve (and they aren’t likely too, prob get worse actually). They need to even stay away from ankle deep on the shoreline. Some will need to stay further back…I’ve seen too much happen.

I’ve been in them during impact (never mentioned it, so as to not encourage others)…I had a purpose for being there. I’ve been in them during near impacts, or cases such as this. I’ve ridden directly though one on a big ship. I’ve seen a lot of hurricane surf…analyzed countless data before, during and after. I’m not going to stop watching this one of course, yet I can NOT give it the attention I normally would either, due to other priorities.

Below is the latest official discussion (you can reference all of these and more in the “archives” link I posted earlier within this thread under “Bill”…everyone should be doing so already) Evidently the 2am discussion was omitted due to too many weather variables coming into play (interesting and atypical indeed). I haven’t looked at anything since 5pm…too exhausted from making mega $ financial decisions related to the storm:

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/archive/2009/al03/al032009.discus.023.shtml?

Everyone needs to use individual discretion with judgment from this point forward, not allowing peer pressure and egos via cowboy keyboard tapping to cloud his/her mind. Always realize there will be other swells, good ones not related to close, intense cyclones. I’ll post up anything I can offer tomorrow to assist with personal decisions.
